- The La Barre Monument (French: Monument La Barre) is a secular monument in Abbeville, (Somme), France. It lies near the railway station (Gare d'Abbeville), next to the canal aqueduct over the River Somme. It was erected in 1907, by public subscription, in commemoration of the ordeal of François-Jean de la Barre, known as the Chevalier (en|Knight) de La Barre. In 1766, at Abbeville, La Barre was tried, found guilty, and executed for failing to salute a religious procession. The monument is today an annual gathering point for defenders of secularism and freethinking. (en)

Érigé en 1907, par souscription publique, en commémoration du supplice du chevalier de La Barre, condamné pour blasphème et profanation. Il est exécuté à Abbeville, en 1766. Le seul élément vérifiable fut le fait qu'il n'avait pas salué une procession religieuse (en n'ôtant pas son chapeau). Il fut alors accusé d’être l'un des auteurs de la profanation d'un crucifix et de la profanation d'un cimetière local. Le monument La Barre est encore aujourd'hui un point de ralliement annuel des défenseurs de la laïcité et des libres-penseurs. (fr)
