- Berhtwald (died 731) was the ninth Archbishop of Canterbury in England. Documentary evidence names Berhtwald as abbot at Reculver before his election as archbishop. Berhtwald begins the first continuous series of native-born Archbishops of Canterbury, although there had been previous Anglo-Saxon archbishops, they had not succeeded each other until Berhtwald's reign. Berhtwald's period as archbishop coincided with the end of Wilfrid's long struggle to regain the Bishopric of York, and the two-year delay between Theodore's death and Berhtwald's election may have been due to efforts to select Wilfrid for Canterbury. After his election, Berhtwald went to Gaul for consecration and then presided over two councils that attempted to settle the Wilfrid issue, finally succeeding at the second council in 705. Berhtwald also was the recipient of the first surviving letter close in Western Europe. (en)

Había servido como abad de Glastonbury. Con él se inicia la serie de prelados oriundos de Inglaterra, aunque anteriormente ya había ocupado la sede arzobispal Deusdedit, arzobispo de Canterbury entre 655 y 664. S'il n'est pas le premier Anglais à occuper ce poste, il inaugure une longue série d'archevêques originaires d'Angleterre. Son nom est également orthographié Brihtwald, Beorhtweald, Bertwald, Berthwald, Beorhtwald ou Beretuald. Berhtwald apparaît dans les sources en 679 en tant qu'abbé de Reculver, un monastère du Kent. Il est élu archevêque en 692 et se rend en Francie pour y être consacré, puis à Rome pour solliciter l'appui du pape Serge Ier. Son archiépiscopat coïncide avec la fin de la longue période durant laquelle Wilfrid tente de récupérer son titre d'archevêque d'York, et Berhtwald préside deux conciles pour tenter de résoudre ce problème.
