Contrary to the accepted scholarly approach, I argue that during the Second Temple period, the Ten Commandments did not have a special liturgical status. Instead, I suggest that the later polemics over their liturgical status, as expressed in the Babylonian and Palestinian Talmud, should be understood in light of parallel discussions regarding the status of the Ten Commandments within Christian literature during the third and fourth centuries. As opposed to seeing the Ten Commandments as an ancient Jewish liturgical expression, which came to an end due to claims by Minim (Christians or others) at the 1st century CE, I argue that these are later traditions that seek to project from their present back to the past. Thus, the claims regarding the cancelation of the Ten Commandments should be seen more as a rhetorical expression than as a record of early historical events. Accordingly, both the desire and the opposition to grant special status to the Ten Commandments constitute a relatively late development, from the Talmudic period. This re-examination has implications both for the study of the development of early Jewish liturgy and for the study of Jewish-Christian polemics in late antiquity.

Contrary to the incessant (oppressive, liberating) discourse about sex, feces are denied, evicted from the language and the social sphere to the private, hidden and meaningless one. My argument is that it is precisely that fear of the body, that promise of the body, which the sexuality discourse systematically and persistently seeks to hide. I illustrate the theoretical argument through a careful reading of a single Talmudic text, where the breakthrough of the defecating body receives a particularly elegant and blatant expression, precisely within an ugly and fastidious discussion about the laws of cleaning the praying body from feces and filth. The discussion helps examine what new fields of discourse can arise from the refusal to divert the gaze from the shitting body and be captivated by the fundamental illusion implied by the great sexuality array.

I suggest that the religious-pluralistic thought of Sacks is strongly influenced by and connected to secularization processes in the modern era as described in the sociological theory of Peter Berger. I show how his thought is the product of a ‘secularized consciousness’, but at the same time also expresses a resistance to secularization in order to fortify the status and role of religion in the modern era. In the second part of the article I content that the religious-pluralism theory of Rabbi Jonathan Sacks cannot be fully understood without a close examination of interests and power relations, which influence, and perhaps even shape and determine his religious ideology. In other words, this part shows how the political and the theological are intertwined, leading to opinions and conclusions that appear to be different from what might have initially been expected.
