CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - In just a day waters have risen significantly and they are not supposed to stop.

Chatham County officials say Sunday is when they believe the water will finally stop rising.

That is why they are warning residents to get out while they still can.

The community of Middle Landing Road is no stranger to rising waters.

“The last time it flooded, I was little, I remember taking the boat out to get up here to get on the bus, yeah that was the last time it flooded. But it was nothing like this, the water was up to the first step then,” said Dakota Clark, Middle Landing Road.

As the Ogeechee River continues to rise, its could be a far cry from the first step.

“If a dam breaks...haha, we’re screwed,” said Clark.

Dakota Clark and her family have lived by the river her entire life.. A way of life she isn’t ready to let go of

“I don’t wanna leave it, I know that people say that things are replaceable but your life isn’t.. But it’s not easy to leave your house,” said Clark.

As parts of the Ogeechee River begin to break loose, Chatham County officials urge residents along the bank to evacuate although it is not mandatory for those neighborhoods yet.

“We want this to be a personal decision, there is a considerable amount of water throughout the community, but it is personal digression,” said Dennis Jones, CEMA.

There are shelters available for residents who need a safe place to go. The humane society is also taking care of the animals for evacuees.
