Pop out the lenses of your 3-D glasses, put on your finest pair of American Apparel disco pants, and get ready to log on: Tumblr is back! Well, the website never really went anywhere, but its aesthetic is being revitalized thanks in part to Addison Rae, whose new video for “High Fashion” is begging to be turned into a 2x2 GIF set.
In the video, directed by Mitch Ryan, Rae finds herself in a series of visually striking locales and situations that exist solely to look cool onscreen. She’s eating a sugar-dusted beignet while wearing a gown. She’s doing modern dance in an empty gray room while covered in more sugar. She’s dressed in a Britney Spears–esque bejeweled bra and jeans while writhing in the bayou. She’s even doing a Wizard of Oz homage.
Rae was 12 in 2012 — when Lana Del Rey’s “Ride” video came out and this era of Tumblr peaked — so I don’t think she’s the one pushing this aesthetic, but kudos to whoever is. It’s something akin to “indie sleaze,” but less annoying. For kicks, here are the stills from “High Fashion” that I think would have done numbers during the Obama era.
