Somehow this is the first review of this show on this site. It's an excellent show with plenty of highlights. It's also the 25th anniversary of their first show.

Set 1
Starting with Jack Straw is always a treat. The vocal mix is a little rough (Vince is very high.) The instrument mix is great, though. Phil is clear and punchy, and Jerry is piercing. His solo before "Jack Straw from Wichita" is excellent. Big ups to the Rhythm Devils who appear to be on it from the get-go too. Half-Step following is a fantastic one-two punch. Jerry's voice is in great shape here. Candyman is great too, with a heartfelt solo by Jerry. BEW, Masterpiece, and Bird Song are all above average readings, with the band fully engaged and committed to the moment. All around great first set with the third Valley Road of the year passionately delivered.

Set 2
Many second sets in the '90s opened with Eyes, and this is a standout version. The band isn't rushed nor slow, they are deep in the pocket, listening to each other and reacting to what they do. Bruce is great here, and he and Jerry are locked in tight. The little sambaesque groove at the end pushed the group to improvise collectively without any one person taking the lead. The abrupt transition to Saint was definitely bumpy, though the drummers bring everyone together nicely. Saint doesn't quite take off, though the energy is definitely there. In an interesting twist, Ship (with lots of "We Want Phil" chants afterwards) brings elevates the intensity (Bruce is excellent) leading to smoking versions of Truckin' (with TOO jam), Smokestack, Space, and TOO. Wharf Rat is a beautiful landing spot, and they really go for it here. Atmosphere and space, letting the song breathe and form itself while they play it. Lovelight is average, and a great Baby Blues sends everyone home happy. Enjoy this gem and pass it along to a friend.
