This show is the debut of the "Wall of Sound" system. It's damn good. I have a pretty good tape copy that i converted to cd. It's not top notch quality, but pretty good. Beautiful Here Comes Sunshine, and the last stretch He's Gone>Truckin'>Other1>Eyes>ChinaDoll>SugMag.

My first GD show. 15 years old.
Now look at me.....

This show is truly one of the all-time greats. The length covers much of the 70-73 output, and the breadth and depth of the playing matches anything else. By now, the "wall" is almost four months into its run, and the boys and Donna are up to the challenge. Guys, the next time your wife wants to fend off someone flirting with you, let her try to sing "You Ain't Woman Enough To Take My Man."

3 bands: Waylon Jennings, New Riders of the Purple Sage, and The Grateful Dead. Garcia played with 2 bands. Need I say more!! One of the best shows I've ever seen. Perfect weather; a great first "day on the green!!"

JUST A HUGE SHOW. This was the time that the Dead would play for over 3 hours. Just lovely.

3/23/74 at the cow palace in daly city is actually the real debut of the wall of sound, the shows played before this from february 73 and on used only its rudimentary design and was not finished yet.

Jerry had a great time watching Ralph Mooney Waylon's pedal steel guy during Jennings set. He was on the stage watching the entire set.

I think that Jerry was a fan of Jennings and really got into the country stuff that day.

This was the first and next to last DOG at Kezar. Next up was Led Zeppelin and the neighbors complained about the volume. Of course The Dead's Wall of Sound that performed at this show was crystal clear. To my ears, The Wall of Sound was audibly clean and transparent whether at a stadium or Winterland.

Uncle Bill later moved the DOG's across The Bay to Oakland Stadium. The only other show I can remember later at Kezar was the SNACK concert.

This is the epitome of The Grateful Dead. '73 they had the new sound system, plus, creatively they were still in that crazy random Europe mode, but they were in their Warner Bros. Row Jimmy Row creativity. This is why people call this the honey year. Because You have all this talent and productivity.

It was great to come across the recording of the show. I will never forget the first DOG. On acid on a beautiful day. Did not know who Waylon Jennings was at the time. Totally tripped out on the whole cowboy theme. Sitting in the stands for his set. Moved down to the front of the stage for NRPS and The Dead. The Wall of Sound was the clearest I had ever heard them. I forgot that they played so long. I was so lost in the music. We were at the center of the world that day.

Hey Ryan, I've got all 3 sets if you're still looking. Great show, would have loved to go to some of these marathon shows from 72'-73. A very decent box of rain (surprisingly). Eyes-china doll sends shivers. The guys must have been exhausted after shows like this, beautiful all the way through

The wall of sound actually began earlier. They used it in a concert in Maples Pavilion at Stanford on February 09, 1973. I was at both events.

Promised Land - Rock N Roll

Tennessee Jed - Funky but in a unorthodox way. Cool.

Sugaree - Moody. The way I like 'em.

Mexicali Blues - Fun as always.

Playing In The Band - Standard Playing for '73 which means listen to it.

Set 2

Here Comes Sunshine - Great stuff going down during this one. Awesomeness.

El Paso - Standard goodness.

Loser - Standard desperation take.

Beat It On Down The Line - They sound drunk. Good time/Fun drunk.

China >Rider - Average through the verses then Bill makes it a Funky Cat post verses & into the Feeling Groovy throw down/Funky Rider. Topsy turvy at times but the 1st of many well played China>Rider's from here to the end of '74. The Feeling Groovy section added in 73/74 is reason number 2,624 why I gravitate towards this time period & why I'm doing a song by song review over a 2 year span.

Big River - A half step slower than the standard frenzied versions. Very well played. I give it 10 Tumbleweeds.

Bertha - Standard goodness.

Around and Around - A rock n roll steam engine. Fine version.

Set 3

Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo - Nice rendition.

Me and My Uncle - Good stuff.

He's Gone - Serves it's purpose as a launch pad.

Truckin' - Rocked passionately. Fun vibes. Bill providing nice sounds throughout. Phil plays solo a bit.

The Other One - Pretty sure the concept of space in future shows had its seeds cutilvated in this tune....among others. Trips start at the 7ish mark. Lush and serene at 10 +

Eyes of the World - Robust energy. 2nd jam at 10:02. Standardize/concise.

China Doll - Standard porcelain.

Sugar Magnolia - Easy now! Danceable!

Of the 31 songs played the 22 above I would download and spin again.

22 of 31 is a grade of 70.97%
