A320 Mech Backup

The mechanical backup system for the Airbus A320 allows pilots to control the aircraft during a temporary complete loss of the fly-by-wire system. It engages when all flight control computers, hydraulic systems, generators and batteries fail, providing pitch control through manual trim and roll control with the rudder. Pilots are advised to disconnect autothrust, keep banks below 15 degrees, and work to restore the computer systems to return to normal flight controls.

How fly by wire can be lost

Some scenariosextremely improbable!!! B Hyd + ELAC 2 + SEC 2 failed, or By temporary losing all flight control computers!, or By losing all generators (Engines, APU, RAT) and battery power, or power .

PFD Message

Pitch is controlled by manual pitch trim Roll is controlled by rudder (No turn coordination and no protections)
Note: In some cases of failures, Roll might be available via side stick inputs.

Mechanical Back-up (A320)

Actions to restore fly by wire

By crew actions. Computer reset restores normal/alternate/direct laws

Mechanical Back-up (A320)

Handling
Recommendations. First disconnect A/THR PF uses man pitch trim and rudder PNF on request manages thrust Try not to exceed 15 deg. in bank to make it easier to fly When trajectory is stabilized, try to restore computers
