Transformations in The Coordinate Plane (NC

The document outlines rigid transformations in the coordinate plane, including dilations, translations, rotations, and reflections. It provides definitions, formulas, and examples for each transformation type, explaining how they affect the size and position of shapes. Additionally, it includes practice problems for applying these concepts.

Transformations
in the Coordinate
Plane (NC.8.G.2)
DILATIONS, TRANSLATIONS,
ROTATIONS, AND REFLECTIONS
LEARNING
TARGET
I can describe the effects of dilations,
translations, rotations, and reflections on
two-dimensional figures using coordinates
ESSENTIAL
QUESTION
How do dilations, translations, rotations,
and reflections affect the position and size
of shapes on the coordinate plane?
Prerequisite
Skill: Graphing
Points on the
Coordinate
Plane
PLOT POINTS
(3, 2), (-1, -4), (0, 5).
Dilation: Scaling a shape larger
or smaller about the origin.

Translation: Moving a shape

Vocabulary without rotating or resizing it.
Review Rotation: Turning a shape
around the origin by 90°
increments.
Reflection: Flipping a shape
across the x-axis or y-axis.
Definition: A dilation
scales a figure larger or
Dilati
smaller, while keeping the
shape the same. on
Formula: For a dilation about
the origin with a scale factor of
k, multiply both x and y
coordinates by k: (x, y) → (kx,
ky).
Example: Original triangle
with points (1, 2), (2, 3), (3,
1) dilated by scale factor of
2 → New points (2, 4), (4, 6),
(6, 2).
Definition: A translation
TRANSLATION
TRANSLATIONS slides a figure from one
position to another
without rotating or
resizing it.
Formula: For a translation by
(a, b), add a to the x-
coordinates and b to the y-
coordinates: (x, y) → (x + a, y
+ b).

Example: A square with points (0,

0), (1, 0), (1, 1), and (0, 1)
translated by (3, 2) → New points
(3, 2), (4, 2), (4, 3), (3, 3).
ROTATIONS
•Definition: A rotation turns the figure
around the origin by a specified angle.
•Formula:
90° counterclockwise: (x, y) → (-y, x)
180°: (x, y) → (-x, -y)
270° counterclockwise (or 90° clockwise):
(x, y) → (y, -x)
•Example: Rotating the point (1, 2) by 90°
counterclockwise → New point (-2, 1).
the figure across a line (like the
REFLECTIONS x-axis or y-axis).

•Formula:
Reflection across the x-axis: (x,
y) → (x, -y)
Reflection across the y-axis: (x,
y) → (-x, y)

•Example: Reflect the point (3,

PRACTICE
Dilate Problem 1: Dilate a triangle by a scale factor of 2.

Problem 2: Translate a square 5 units to the left and 2 units

Translate up.

Rotate Problem 3: Rotate a rectangle 180° about the origin.

Reflect Problem 4: Reflect a triangle across the x-axis.
