A STUDY ON THE VARIETIES OF PACKTECH AND ITS POTENTIALITIES

PRESENTED BY

MRS.C.CATHERINE MARY SHARMILA, M.SC M.PHIL (TEXTILES AND CLOTHING)

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, DEPARTMENT OF COSTUME DESIGN AND FASHION
BISHOP APPASAMY COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCE, COIMBATORE
INTRODUCTION
 Technical textile plays a major role in all aspects.
Packaging material is one of the important branches of
technical textiles. Packaging textiles include all textiles
packing material, agricultural and other goods.

 Sacks and bags made of traditional jute, cotton or

natural fiber are gradually casting way for modern
synthetic fibers. These technical textiles used in
packaging and subsequent transportation are called
“PACKTECH”. Packaging can be defined as

 Packaging = (Function/ Costs)* Services.

 At one end PACKTECH includes heavy weight,
dense woven fabrics, and on the other end
light weight non woven used as durable
papers, tea bags and other food and industrial
product wrappings.

 Packtech includes several flexible packing

materials made of textile used for packing
various goods in the industrial, agricultural,
consumer and other goods.

 It ranges from polymer based bags used for

industrial packing to jute based sacks used
for packing food grains and packaging used
for tea.
USES OF TEXTILES IN CONSUMER PACKAGING

 FIBC (Flexible Intermediate Bulk Containers) for

powder and granular material
 Laundry bags and other bulk packaging products
 Sacks for storage
 Twin and string for tying packages etc
 Non paper tea bags and coffee filters
 Food soaker pads
 Net packaging for storing, packing, transporting,
retailing foodstuffs, toys, woven filter strapping,
light weight mailbags
 Soft luggage
CRITIRIA

 Government, standard organization, consumers,

retailers and packagers are considering several
types of criteria for ranking and comparing
packaging is based on their sustainability are an
active area of development.

 Each and every organization has its own goals

for sustainable packaging they are functional,
cost effective and supporting long term human
and ecological health.
SPECIFIC FACTORS
 Reduced packaging
 Logistics efficiency
 Energy efficiency
 Recycle content
 Reusable packaging
 Using renewable resources
 Using bio-degradable and compostable materials
 Avoiding toxic materials
 Atmospheric effects
 Water
 Workers impact
RECENT DEVELOPMENTS
 Packaging technology has undergone significant
development over the last 30 years and materials
have been a large driver.

 Good packaging facilities cooperation between

product, packaging process and material to meet
the needs of all stakeholders along the supply chain.

 Materials research in leading to different types of

bio degradable plastics, improved coatings for
better barriers and extended self life.
CRITICISM
 Efforts towards “greener” packaging are supported in a
sustainability community however, these are often viewed
only as incremental steps and not as an end.
 Some picture a true sustainable steady state economy that
may be very different from today’s
 Greatly reduced energy usage

 Minimal ecological footprint,

 Fewer consumer packaged goods,

 Local purchasing with short food supply chains,

 Little processed foods etc.

 Less packaging is necessary in this economy;

 Fewer packaging options would exits;

 Simpler packaging forms may be necessary

SUSTAINABLE PACKAGING
 Sustainable packaging should meet the functional
and economic needs of the present without
compromising the ability for the future generations
to meet their own needs..
 It requires more analysis and documentation to look
at the package design, choice of materials,
processing and life cycle.
 Recently many companies implement the recycled
reusable packaging material.
 Sustainable packaging is no longer focused on just
recycling or Just as packaging is not only eco target
although it is still top of mind for many.
TYPES OF PACKAGING MATERIALS:

 There are varieties of packaged materials.

The technical textile products covered
under packtech are given as follows
 Polyolefin Woven Sacks
 FIBC
 Leno Bags
 Jute Hessian And Sacks
 Tea Bags
 Soft Luggage Products
COMMON MATERIALS USED IN PACKAGING

 Plastics
 Paper / Cardboard
 Metals
 Glass
 Wood
 Bamboo
 Cork
 Alu board
 Laminates
 Brick carton
POTENTIALITIES OF PACKTECH
POLYOLEFIN WOVEN SACKS
 Used in packing cement, fertilizers, thermo plastic

raw materials, food grains, sugar etc,.

ADVANTAGES
 Higher strength, light weight, minimal seepage,

moisture proof, long lasting (durable) and cheaper.

FIBC bags
 These are called as jumbo bags, it is of three
types panel type, circular woven and baffle type.
 Used in bulk packaging of PET and PVC,

petrochemicals, minerals, agro products,

chemicals, oilcakes, detergents, oat meal, clay,
mica and feldspar, cement, pharmaceuticals,
fish meal.
ADVANTAGES
 low cost of material handling, low weight,

transportation is easy, organic resistance, eco

friendly.
LENO BAGS
 Leno bags are excellent for packing
and preserving vegetables like potato,
onion, ginger etc, fruits like pineapple,
citrus fruits, coconut etc. It is made up
of netted fabrics.
Advantages
 Superior aesthetic, excellent

mechanical properties, ease in

handling and storage, suitable for dry
skin vegetables and cold storage
JUTE HESSIAN & JUTE SACKS

 It is also termed as Burlap a finer quality jute

fabric. At present, shopping bags are being
made out of hessian fabrics, upholstery and
home furniture.
 Recently it is available both as dyed and
bleached fabrics and treated with vegetable oil.
 Jute sacks refers to the coarser and heavier
cloths with high weight. It is made up of plain or
twill weave.
 This jute bag is in demand because of openness
of the weave, which allows air to circulate while
protecting the content.
TEA BAGS

 These tea bags are sold by the

organized producers of tea. It consists of
filter paper pouch with a thread, which holds
the tea powder and the tag.
 It is made with a blend of wood and
vegetable fibers. The filter paper used for
making tea bags is a 12- 17 gsm non woven
material.
SOFT LUGGAGE

 The luggage industry is classified into hard and soft

luggage. Hard one is mostly the large travel plastic
bags. Soft one is made of woven fabric like nylon
and polyester.

 It comprises of upright, totes, duffle and sky bags

which can be with or without wheels and handles.
 It includes handbags, military backpacks, wallets,
briefcases and other soft luggage items.
CONCLUSION

 Nevertheless the excessive consumption of

packaged products has become an
environmental problem which we must all
resolve together.

 A better environmental culture invites the

user to deposit the hazardous packaging
materials in a recycling bin.
