Inverse Functions

The document discusses inverse functions, explaining how to find them and why some do not exist, particularly focusing on one-one and many-one functions. It provides a step-by-step method for finding inverses and includes activities for practice. Additionally, it highlights the relationship between the domain of the inverse and the range of the original function, as well as the graphical representation of inverse functions.

Inverse functions

Finding the inverse of a

function.
Exploring why some inverse
functions don’t exist.
What is it?
 INVERSE FUNCTION – reversing a
function, “undoing”.
 f -1 notates an inverse function. (not
1/f)
WHAT??
Find the inverse of f(x)=4x-2

x *4 -2 4x-2

(x+2)/4 /4 +2 x

So f -1 (x)=(x+2)/4

 Answerquestion E2 on page 18 of
your Core 3 book
A neat little trick…
 As always in maths, there is a trick to
this…

1. Write function as a rule in terms of y

and x.
2. Swap ‘x’ and ‘y’
3. Rearrange to get in terms of y.
A neat little trick…
Find the inverse f x  2x  3

Type of rule Function?

One-One Yes

Many-One Yes

One-Many No
Inverse functions
 What type of inverse function would a
one-one function give? Is it still a
function?
 What type of inverse function would a
many-one function give? Is it still a
function?
Inverse functions

Inverse functions
only exist for
one-one
functions.
Many-one functions
f(x)=x2 has two
inputs (-2 and 2) that
f x  x 2 generate the output

The inverse would
give two possible
outputs for input of
4.
Functions can’t have
two possible outputs
-2 2 so inverse DOES NOT
exist.

on page 18/19 of your Core
3 book.
Things to note..
 The domain of f-1 is the range of f.
 The graph of an inverse function can
be found by reflecting a function in the
line y=x
 Check this by plotting y=3x+1 and

y=(x-1)/3 on your graphic calculator.
