What is a Function?
• A function is a relation where
each input has exactly one
output.
• Notation: f(x) represents the
output when x is the input.
Linear Function
• Equation form: f(x) =
mx + b
• Graph is a straight line.
• Constant rate of
change.
Example: f(x) = 2x + 1
Quadratic Function
• Equation form: f(x) = ax² + bx
+c
• Graph is a parabola.
• Symmetrical curve.
Example: f(x) = x² - 4x + 3
Cubic Function
• Equation form: f(x) = ax³ +
bx² + cx + d
• Graph can have twists or
turns.
Example: f(x) = x³ - 3x
Absolute Value
Function
• Equation form: f(x) = |
x|
• Graph is V-shaped.
• Always non-negative.
Example: f(x) = |x - 2|
Exponential
Function
• Equation form: f(x) = a^x,
where a > 0
• Rapid growth or decay.
Example: f(x) = 2^x
Logarithmic Function
• Equation form: f(x) =
log_b(x)
• Inverse of exponential
functions.
• Grows slowly.
Example: f(x) = log₂(x)
Rational Function
•Equation form: f(x) = P(x)/Q(x),
where Q(x) ≠ 0
• Can have asymptotes.
Example: f(x) = 1 / (x - 1)
Piecewise Function
• Defined by different
expressions over intervals.
• Graph is a combination of
segments.
Example:
f(x) = x + 2, if x < 0
x², if x ≥0
Summary of Function
