Grammatical Function
Arazoo R. Othman
• Grammatical function is concerned with the grammatical relationship
between the words in a sentence. e.g
• For example, in a sentence such as "John raked the leaves," we should
know that the word John is not just a noun. The noun John is the
performer of the action represented by the verb and is therefore the
subject of the sentence. Thus while the word John is a noun by its
part of speech, it is a subject by its function within the sentence.
• The function of a particular constituent is highly correlated with its
particular location or position in the sentence. For example the
subject usually occupies the first noun phrase in the sentence.
Seven grammatical functions
• 1. Subject of the verb
That which performs the action of a verb, is described or identified, or about
which an assertion is made.
Examples: The leopard stalked its prey.
The book was large.
2. Verb
That which asserts an action or state.
Examples: Their monkey climbed the trees.
His claim seems ridiculous.
3. Subjective complement
That which follows be or a verb like become and identifies or describes
the subject.
Examples: The woman was a doctor.
The artist seemed upset.
4. Direct object
That which undergoes the action of the verb.
Examples: Malcolm bought a chandelier.
She attended Southern Virginia College.
• 5. Indirect Object
That person or thing to or for whom an action is performed.
Examples: The coach brought the athletes some uniforms.
The realtor found the buyer a nice house.
6. Objective complement
That which completes the direct object and describes or identifies it.
Examples: We considered the manager incompetent.
They elected Henry treasurer.
• 7. Object of Preposition
That which is related to another word by a preposition.
Examples: The dog ran near the river.
Sally paid rent for her mother.
• In addition to the functions listed above there are a few more. These
include modifiers and connectors. The above functions are important
to consider at this stage, because an understanding of them is
important in the analysis of sentence types.
