Packet Switching

Packet switching is a data transmission method that breaks information into smaller packets, allowing them to travel independently over a network and be reassembled at the destination. This approach enhances efficiency, reliability, and cost-effectiveness by enabling multiple users to share the same network and allowing packets to take alternative routes if needed. Key components of packets include headers, payloads, and footers, which facilitate routing and error-checking.

Packet Switching
Packet switching is a method used in computer networks to

GOSTUDI
send data. Instead of sending a big chunk of data all at
once, the information is broken into smaller pieces called
"packets." Each packet travels independently over the

O
network, possibly taking different routes to reach its
destination. Once all the packets arrive, they are
reassembled to form the original message.

This method is efficient because it allows many users to

share the same network by intermixing packets. If one route
is busy or fails, packets can take alternative paths, making
it more reliable than older methods like circuit switching,
which required a single, dedicated connection for the whole
message.
How Packet
Switching
Works
Breaking Data into Packets: Explain how data is divided into
smaller, manageable packets.
Packet Components: Mention typical components of a packet,
such as:

● Header (includes sender/receiver info)

● Payload (actual data)
● Footer (error-checking information)

Routing Packets: Show how packets take independent routes

across a network to their destination.
Packet Reassembly
Reconstructing Data: Describe how packets
are reassembled at the destination.
Handling Lost Packets: Explain how
systems deal with lost or delayed packets
(retransmission).
Advantages of Packet Switching

Efficiency: Multiple users can share the same network.

Reliability: Packets can take different paths, avoiding
network congestion or failure.
Cost-Effectiveness: Resources are shared, so costs are lower
than dedicated circuits.
