INTRODUCTION TO VOLLEYBALL
Volleyball is a team sport which is played in a court with a high net by two (2)
teams with six (6) persons on each team court. It may be played by all male, all
females, or mixed teams with net height adjustments for boys, girls, or age-
group differences; and using a variety of playing surfaces; wood, rubberized
materials, or grass.
The basic objective of the game is to keep the ball which is served over the net,
from contacting the floor on your side and to return it so that it contacts the floor
on the opponents' side before they can return it. The team that fails to return the
ball within the specific limits loses the chance to serve and gives a point to the
team's opponent.
There are two main kinds of competitive volleyball played in the world right
now. They are team volleyball and beach volleyball. Both are Olympic sports
and have competitive leagues.
Team volleyball is played indoors on a hard court with 6 people per team.
 Beach volleyball is played outdoors on the sand with 2 players per team. The
rules, strategy, and discussion here will focus on team volleyball.
HISTORY
Volleyball was first developed by William G. Morgan
After graduation from Springfield College in Massachusetts in 1895, William
G. Morgan took a position as physical director of the Holyoke Young Men's
Christian Association.
The main activity was basketball, a relatively strenuous sport for the
businessmen who used the facilities of the gymnasium. Some older men did not
like it because of the roughness of the game.
In 1896 at a YMCA Conference at Springfield College, Mr. Morgan publicized
a new game which is the VOLLEYBALL. A net 6 feet 6 inches was stretched
across the gymnasium. The main object of this new game was to hit the ball
back and forth over the net with the hands.
Before The game started with a serve. The server was allowed three "outs" after
which the opposite team was permitted to serve.
To constitute an out, the ball had to land out- of-bounds or hit the floor on a second
bounce. The game was introduced as "Mintonette" but after watching the game, a
faculty member of Springfield College, Dr. Alfred T. Halstead, recommended that the
name be changed to volleyball. Shortly after the game's invention, Mr. Morgan drew up
specifications for a special ball.
By 191 2, several rule changes had been made. Volleyball became very popular with
schools, colleges, playgrounds, and the armed forces.
In 1928, the United States Volleyball Association was formed.
 The FIVB-sponsored world volleyball championships (for men only in 1949; for both
men and women in 1952 and succeeding years) led to acceptance of standardized
playing rules and officiating.
 The game volleyball was introduced in the Philippines by the YMCA in 1910. This
sport became an Olympic sport in1964 during the Tokyo Olympic.
The 2000 Olympics introduced significant rule changes to international competition.
One change created the libero, a player on each team who serves as a defensive
specialist.

VOLLEYBALL SKILLS
Volleyball is a sport that requires you to master a complex skill set. Because you rotate
from playing front fine positions to back line positions, you constantly are shifting from setting up
offensive plays to completing offensive plays. You also must shift quickly from offense to
Défense. During any given sequence in volleyball, a player must be prepared to execute a
variety of skills.
SERVE
• The volleyball serve is the first opportunity for a player to score a point. It
begins each rally. Once you toss the ball in the air you must contact the ball to
send it over the net to land inside the lines of the court.
• There are three types of SERVICE
1. Sidearm serve. is a type of serve where the ball is struck with an arm motion that moves
sideways.

2. Underhand serve -is a serve where the ball is hit with an upward swing of the hand, typically
from below the waist.

3. Overhand serve- is a serve where the ball is tossed and hit with a strong, downward motion
from above the shoulder.
DIG
The "dig" is a forearm pass that is used to control the ball and
pass it to the setter at the net. It is usually the first contact by the
team and an effective shot to use in defense, such as when
receiving a spike.
•The "libero" handles much of the teams serve reception and
is pivotal in backcourt defense. Libero. in modern volleyball
refers to the player who cannot play in front of the attack line,
has different color of jersey uniform and can be substituted even
without the help of the second referee.
SET
The "set' is an overhead pass used to change the
direction of the dig and put the ball in a good position for the
spiker.

•The set is usually the second contact in a rally and the

person who sets the ball the most is called the setter.

How to Set

1. Bring your hands together.

2. Put your hands together with your fingertips
touching.
3. Open up your hands, forming a triangle with your
index fingers and thumbs.
4. Bring your fingers apart to a distance that would
be perfect for placing a ball.
The "spike" is when the ball is hit or smashed across the net. It
is the most powerful shot in Volleyball — and the most effective
way to win a rally.

Spiking is act of scoring the ball over the net into the opposing
court effectively and aggressively. It is a form of attacking and a
very popular offensive move used in volleyball. It is the act of
jumping and hitting the ball down into the opponent's court,
which hopefully results in a "kill". There are various types of
hits- the outside, middle, and back hits based on who the hitter
is.

•A spike is usually performed on the third contact after the

setter; the playmaker of your team has set up the ball. The
purpose of spike is to score a point for your team and finish the
ongoing rally - or at least to make other team's playmaking as
hard as possible. A spike could be also called a hit, a swing or a
shot.
BLOCK
• A block is the first opportunity for a team on
defense to keep the team on offense from
hitting into their court
• A block is an action taken by players by
standing or jumping at the front of the net to
stop or alter the opponent's attack
• However, it is the main defense against the
opponent's attacks and helps to slow down the
speed of the attacks to make it easier for the
bock row to poss. Blocking con be done by one
to three players. There are single, double, and
triple blocks in volleyball The concept behind
the three blocks is all the same.
Volleyball Positions and Roles
PLAYERS ROLES
SETTER  The setter is the main contributor to the offense.
 Responsible in setting the ball perfectly to the outside
hitters.
 Communicate to the players for more strategic play
and perfect attacks.
 Without the setter, there wouldn't be hard spikes or
technical ball movement.
 Set the ball with the outside hitter and middle hitter.

OUTSIDE HITTER  The outside hitters are the main attackers of the play.
 Possess the following skills like jumping high, quick
movement, and adapting to different situations.
 Needs to be prepared for hits from variety of places.

OPPOSITE HITTER  These players need to be in a perfect balance of both

offense and defense.
 Get a lot of opportunities in hitting the ball.
 Jumping ability is vital to this role.
Get more in defensive responsibility.
MIDDLE BLOCKER  The tallest play on the team.
 Their main role for the team is being ththe
first line to defense against the opposing
team's hits.
 Needs to be knowledgeable in reading the
opponents attacks.
 Have a quick response in raising his or her
arms above the net in a blocking attempt.
 Usually do quick points throughout ththe set.

LIBERO  They can only play on the back row of the

court.
 They are the ideal person to receive a hit from
the opposite team.
 There are set rules the libero needs to follow,
such as not attacking the ball at the net,
playing a set for an attacker from the front, and
more.
 They wear a different colored jersey

Touching the net with any part of the body while the ball is in play. Exception: If the ball is driven
into the net with such force that it causes the net to contact an opposing player, no foul will be called,
and the ball shall continue to be in play.
When attacking a ball Coming from the opponent's court, contacting the ball when reaching over
the net is a violation if the ball hasn't yet broken the vertical plane of the net.
Crossing the court center line with any part of your body. Exception: if it's the hand or foot, the
entire hand or entire foot must cross for it to be a violation. Serving out of order.

contact the back row player is near the net and has part of his/her body above the top of the net
