Systematic Methods of Classification

The document outlines systematic methods for classifying fingerprint patterns, focusing on primary, secondary, and sub-secondary classifications based on whorls and loops. It details the numerical values assigned to each finger and the categorization of ridge tracing patterns into inner, outer, and meeting whorls. Additionally, it describes how to derive final and major classifications based on ridge counts and patterns observed on the thumbs.

Systematic Methods of

Classification
Henry/ Primary Classification

• In this classification whorls is considered as a valued group and the other group as
non valued group.
• All the ten fingers are given a number starting from
RT,RI,RM,RR,RL,LT,LI,LM,LR &LL.
• Whenever a whorl pattern appears in finger, the corresponding value is given to
that finger.
• If other pattern present the obtained value 0/0. the value of 0/0 is mathematical
not satisfactory, so a base value of 1 was added t the original fraction marking it
1/1.
• P= RI+RR+LT+LM+LL+1/RT+RM+RL+LI+LR+1

Extensions to Primary Classification System
Secondary:-
• It is given by symbol of patterns present in Right Index /Left Index
• No pairing of fingers.
• It is written in capital letters and as Symbols.
Arches- A
Tented Arches- T
Radial loops-R
Ulnar loop-U
Whorls- W
Central Pocket- C
Twinned Loop-S
Accidental and lateral loop-X
Sub-secondary
• Only value of six digits are used here and they are RI,RM,RR,LI,LM&LR.
• All whorls appearing on these fingers are given by tracing “I,M,O”.
• Only Ulnar loops are considered.
• Right hand value appear in numerator and left hand in denominator.
• In ulnar loop ridges from delta to core are counted.
Classification of Ridge Tracing Patterns for Whorls

There are three main categories on which ridge tracing can be classified. These are:
1.Inner Whorl
2.Outer Whorl
3.Meeting Whorl

If the traced ridge goes above or reverse

back inner before reaching to right delta
and there are three or more interviewing
ridges between the traced ridge and the
right delta. It is considered as INNER (I).
If the ridge tracing followed near the right
delta’s relative point above or below with three
or more intervening ridges between such delta
and traced ridge. It is called an OUTER (O).
If the tracing of the ridge starts from the left
delta and is followed to the right delta or nearest
to it with one or two intervening ridges between
the delta and traced ridge.

In other words, all other tracings that end, above

or below the right delta and have less than 3
intermediate ridges, are always classified as
Meet.
Final:
• It is obtained by the ridge count on the Right Little over left little RL/LL.
• If an arch are present in the little finger's final is put as a dash (-).
• In case of whorl present in Right hand, count is done from the left delta to the core
and v/s/ versa.
• If two core present in case of composite or accidentals , count from the respective
delta to closest core is done.
• If it is case of double loops, then the core that is ascending is the core

LT LI LM LR LL

Major
• This is obtained by the tracing given by the pattern present on Right thumb and
Left thumb.
• If it is a whorl, then ridge tracing is considered.
• If it is loop, then the ridge counted from delta to the core.
• Thumb-
Count of 1-12 gives ‘I’
Count of 13-19 gives ‘M’
Count of 20 &more gives ‘O’
For arches, plain and tented arch will always be considered under I types as they do
not have any ridge count.
For whorls, the ridge tracing is performed by tracing the basal radiant of left and
right.
O type is valid for accidental, central-pocket and double loops.
Key Classification System

• It involves the ridge counting of loops or whorl patterns appearing on the right
thumb only.
• Pattern is represented by small alphabets.
• In case of whorl right thumb the left delta is considered.
