Understanding

Ways to Collect
Data
Module 4
Research Design
The research design states to the whole approach that you decide on to add the
different components of the study in a coherent and logical way, thereby,
ensuring you will effectively address the research problem; it constitutes the
blueprint for the collection, measurement, and analysis of data. Note that your
research problem determines the type of design you should use.
Research Design
Quantitative / Qualitative Research

 Quantitative Research
Methods that give emphasis to objective measurements and
the statistical, mathematical, or numerical analysis of data
collected through samples, questionnaires, and surveys, or by
employing pre-existing statistical data using computational
techniques. Quantitative research concentrates on collecting
numerical data and simplifying it across groups of people or to
explain a particular phenomenon.
Quantitative Research
Survey research uses interviews, questionnaires, and sampling polls
to get a sense of behavior with intense precision.
Correlational research tests for the relationships between two
variables.
Causal-comparative research looks to uncover a cause-and-effect
relationship. This research is not conducted between the two groups
on each other.
Experimental research is guided specifically by a hypothesis.
Qualitative Research
A systematic subjective approach used
to describe life experiences and give
them meaning. To gain insight; explore
the depth, richness, and complexity
inherent in the phenomenon.
Qualitative Research
Ethnography, you immerse yourself in the target participants’ environment to
understand the goals, cultures, challenges, motivations, and themes that
emerge.
Narrative approach weaves together a sequence of events, usually from just
one or two individuals to form a cohesive story.
Phenomenological study is an appropriate qualitative method when you
want to describe an event, activity, or phenomenon
Case study a way of explaining an organization, entity, company, or event
which involves a deep understanding through multiple types of data sources.

Writing Chapter 3:Methods and Procedure
Begin the chapter with a brief explanation of what the chapter is all about. The
common introductory explanation is as follows;

Writing the Introductory Paragraph

This chapter presents the discussion on the research methodology of the study,
the subjects, sampling technique, research instruments, procedure of data gathering,
and statistical treatment that will be used for accurate data analysis and interpretation
Research Methodology

This section specifies what method

of research will be used - descriptive,
correlation, experimental, or
documentary analysis.
Research Design
Research design is a blueprint of a research
study. It includes research methodologies,
tools, and techniques to conduct the research.
It helps to identify and address the problem
that may rise during the process of research
and analysis.
Subjects/Respondents of the Study
A distinction should be made between subjects
and respondents of the study. Subjects are
persons investigated in the study.
It is important to state your number of subjects
or respondents and who they are, Also, explain
how the number will be decided upon.
Slovin’s Formula
Research Instrument
Research instruments are tools used for data collection and
analysis. Researchers can use these tools in most fields. In business,
they aid marketers in market research and customer behavior study.
Some examples of research instruments include interviews,
questionnaires, online surveys, and checklists.
Choosing the right research instrument is essential as it can reduce
data collection time and provide more accurate results for the
research purpose.
Data Gathering Procedure

Data collection is a systematic process of

gathering observations or measurements. Whether
you are performing research for business,
governmental or academic purposes, data
collection allows you to gain first-hand knowledge
and original insights into your research problem.
Statistical Treatment of Data

In its simplest form, statistical treatment of data

is taking raw data and turning it into something that
can be interpreted and used to make decisions. This
process is important for businesses because it
allows them to take customer feedback and turn it
into actionable insights.
