Plate Boundaries

The document discusses plate tectonics, explaining that the Earth's surface is divided into large and small lithospheric plates that move slowly. It outlines the types of plate boundaries: divergent, convergent, and transform, detailing their characteristics and effects such as earthquakes and mountain formation. Additionally, it includes a crossword puzzle and assessment activities related to the lesson on plate tectonics.

Types of Plate Boundaries
1. Divergent boundaries refer to plates
that separate and move apart in
opposite directions forming new
lithosphere - the young seafloor.
Result:
• ocean ridges (seafloor
spreading) or
• at rifted continental
margins (rift valley).
2. Convergent boundaries are formed when
two plates move toward each other. Types of
convergent boundary:
a. continental plate and oceanic plate: The
oceanic plate bends downward at the
subduction zone forming a trench. The Oceanic
plate sinks because it is denser than the
continental plate.
b. two oceanic plates: the older plate sinks.
c. two continental plates: they collide and buckle
up forming mountain ranges. No subduction
3. Transform
fault boundaries
are plates sliding
past or slipping
past each other.
