Chapter 8

PRESENTING AND
COMMUNICATING A
RESEARCH REPORT
INTRODUCTION
•Research does not end after writing the report. A part of doing research
is to present and communicate it to the public.

•This chapter focuses on three (3) ways of presenting and communicating

research:

(1)Presenting the research report at professional meetings and

conferences
(2)Presenting the research report before a faculty committee; and
(3)Presenting and submitting the research report for publication
TOPICS

• PRESENTING THE RESEARCH REPORT AT PROFESSIONAL

MEETINGS AND CONFERENCES

• PRESENTING THE REPORT BEFORE A FACULTY COMMITTEE

• PUBLICATION OF THE RESEARCH REPORT

PRESENTING THE RESEARCH
REPORT AT PROFESSIONAL
MEETINGS AND CONFERENCES
–Presenting a research report to a group of professionals and/ or
non-professionals at professional meetings and conferences involve
more telling and not so much discussion as in thesis/dissertation
defense. Whether the researcher-presenter is invited to report his
paper, or on his own initiative presents the paper before a group of
non-professionals or professionals, he should not worry or be afraid
of facing the audience.
• Respond

THE 4 R's • Restructure

of Public
Speaking • Rehearse

• Relax
THE 4 R's OF PUBLIC SPEAKING

RESPOND
• responding to the materials
• responding to the audience
RESTRUCTURE
Most important facts
(points, ideas, questions, conclusions)

Supporting evidence,
examples, illustrations,
expert opinions, facts, and
others.
Restatement of
major points.
THE 4 R's OF PUBLIC SPEAKING

RESPOND
Five steps in a rehearsal:
• Fit the time of your oral presentation to the time allowed.
• Support the presentation with audio-visual aids.
• Practice talking before an imaginary or live audience.
• Adjust and correct the oral presentation.
• All the needed equipment for the presentation must be
ready.
THE 4 R's OF PUBLIC SPEAKING

RELAX

Breathe. Deliberately take slower and deeper

breath.
Move. Move around; do not just stay in one place
all the time.
Support. Emotional and physical support lessen
fear and makes the person relaxed.
PRESENTING THE REPORT BEFORE
A FACULTY COMMITTEE
PRESENTING THE REPORT BEFORE A FACULTY COMMITTEE

In a typical set up, presenting a research paper

before a faculty committee usually takes one to two hours
with a few audiences.

PRESENTING THE REPORT BEFORE A FACULTY COMMITTEE

Important things to note when presenting a research paper:

• The candidate must be knowledgeable of the
study/research they present.
• The candidate may consult their research adviser to make
their oral presentation organized and efficient.
• The candidate must prepare audio-visual materials such as
PowerPoint presentation to present tables, diagrams, and
lists.
• The candidate must be concise and straight to the point to
conserve the time allocated for their presentation.
PRESENTING THE REPORT BEFORE A FACULTY COMMITTEE

What to expect during an oral presentation?

• There will be questions, reactions, comments, and
suggestions coming from the panel. Candidates must be
able to anticipate these responses and be prepared to
answer them with skills.
• Certain questions may lead to other questions and so on.
PRESENTING THE REPORT BEFORE A FACULTY COMMITTEE

Other important things to note during an oral presentation:

• Take suggestions and/or comments of the panel as an
opportunity to enrich your study rather than criticism.
• The presenter should be able to distinguish conclusion
from findings.
• The oral presentation and defense of a research report
should be a learning experience for the candidate or
examinee.
PUBLICATION OF RESEARCH
REPORT
PUBLICATION OF RESEARCH REPORT

Publishing your research is an important step in your academic

career. While there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach, this guide is
designed to take you through the typical steps in publishing a
research paper. Discover how to get your paper published, from
choosing the right journal and understanding what a peer reviewed
article is, to responding to reviewers and navigating the production
process.
PUBLICATION OF RESEARCH REPORT

Step 1: Choosing a Journal

Choosing which journal to publish your research paper in is one of
the most significant decisions you have to make as a researcher.
Where you decide to submit your work can make a big difference to
the reach and impact your research has.

Step 2: Writing Your Paper

laptopWriting an effective, compelling research paper is vital to
getting your research published. But if you’re new to putting
together academic papers, it can feel daunting to start from
scratch.

Step 3: Making Your Submission

Once you’ve chosen the right journal and written your manuscript,
the next step in publishing your research paper is to make your
submission. Each journal will have specific submission
requirements.

Step 4: Navigating the Peer Review Process

Peer review is the independent assessment of your research article
by independent experts in your field. Reviewers, also sometimes
called ‘referees’, are asked to judge the validity, significance, and
originality of your work.

Step 5: The Production Process

If your paper is accepted for publication, it will then head into
production. At this stage of the process, the paper will be prepared
for publishing in your chosen journal.
During production, you’ll have a variety of tasks to complete and
decisions to make. For example, you’ll need to check and correct
proofs of your article and consider whether or not you want to
produce a video abstract to accompany it.

RESEARCH IMPACT
Research Impact is about looking at the effects a piece of
research has had. There are many different ways your research
could have an impact depending on the nature of the work. Some
key terms and areas of impact are:
• Academic Impact
• Cultural/Societal
• Policy
• Economical
• Environmental
• Health
