ISO MTD – The new test dust

Production of the old test dust
ACFTD stopped in 1992. The sole supplier
was AC Spark Plug Division (later
AC Rochester Division), part of General
Motors Corporation.

A standardized test dust complying with ISO

12103-1 A3 has been chosen as a successor:
ISO Medium Test Dust (ISO MTD).

ISO MTD is used for filter performance testing

(ISO 16889) and within reference materials of
NIST (ISO 11171).

All particle sizes in µm, determined by ISO 11171, are supplemented by a „c“ in brackets –
„c“ means „certified“

e.g.: Filter efficiency: 200 = 12 µm(c)

For primary and secondary calibration of particle counters reference materials are used which
are certified by NIST:
Primary calibration with SRM 2806 (Suspension) is carried out by the supplier and after
repairing respectively
Secondary calibration with SRM 8631 (dry ISO MTD) is regularly carried out at the test
bench

Multi-Pass-Test ISO 16889

A transfer of the old results of the Multi-Pass-Test (ISO 4572) into the new
standard (ISO 16889) is unworkable.

Due to the change of the particle size definition from ACFTD to ISO MTD the indication of
the filter efficiency changes from e. g. 3 µm to 5 µm (c).

Additionally the calculation of the beta value plays a role e. g. from the smallest x  75 to
the medium beta value x(c)  200.

For conversion of the dirt holding capacity from ACFTD to ISO MTD there is no constant
factor (with tests, deviations have been determined of ± 30%).

In the new version ISO 4406:1999 the reference particle sizes have been changed.

Reference particle sizes > 5 µm / > 15 µm > 4 µm(c) / > 6 µm(c) / >

e.g.: 15 / 12 e.g.: 18 / 15 / 12

The new particle sizes 6 µm(c) and 14 µm(c) (ISO 11171) approx. correspond to the old
sizes 5 µm und 15 µm (ISO 4402).
This change meant that in most cases the same oil samples could be related to the same
cleanliness class, independent of the calibration standard.

New Standards in Fluid Technology
Cleanliness Class ISO 4406

When measuring samples according to ISO 4406 there are some differences
in the cleanliness classes
The leading filter manufacturers co-operated to see whether cleanliness classes determined
by practical experience could be used as reference values.

The result for >6 µm(c), determined by the new calibration, is half to1 class worse
than the class of the old calibration >5 µm. This results from the rounding from
6,4 µm(c) to 6 µm(c).

The result for >14 µm(c) corresponds in most cases to the same class of the old
calibration >15 µm. The few deviations result essentially from counts at the class limits.

 there are no reference values for the 4 µm(c) classification .
