APPROXIMATING
THE MEASURES
OF QUANTITY
APPROXIMATING LENGTH, WEIGHT OR MASS, AND VOLUME
Do you know how tall your house is? How heavy a bunch of
bananas is? How many liters of water do you drink a day?
Ruler, meter stick, weighing scale, flat form balance, and beaker
are some of the instruments invented, to help us determine the
measure quantities. But, we cannot bring these instruments
every day. Thus, it is important to learn approximation.
There are times that when we approximate the measure of a
quantity, we round off the measurement.
Example 1:
Example 2:
In the examples, approximating length, weight or mass, and
volume is possible for you have a basis. For you to be good in
approximation, it is a must to know at least how long a meter is,
how heavy an object is, and how much liter can occupy a
certain container.
What are your answers? Are your answers 2m and1.5 L? You
are good in approximation.
Congratulations!!!
APPROXIMATING TEMPERATURE
Guess-Compare and Check Activity: Give 3 or more answers.
You may ask help from your parent.
CHECK:
1. Were you able to give the correct
answer?
2. Did you choose correctly the
nearest approximated temperature?
In this lesson, you will learn how to approximate temperature. Before we
proceed, let us first recall the steps in rounding off numbers. Remember in
lesson one, approximating means rounding off numbers.
How to approximate or round off numbers?
1. Determine which digit is being rounded.
2. Copy all the numbers at the left side of the digit being rounded.
3. Decide whether you will retain or add 1 to the number being
rounded by looking at the number next to it at its right. If it is 4 or less,
retain the digit being rounded. If it is 5 or more, add 1 to the digit being
rounded. Change the remaining digit at its right to zero.
Example 3: Approximate 4.53ºC to the nearest tenths.
b. What is the number at the right side of the digit being
rounded? 3 is the number at the right side of 5.
c. Hence, 4.53ºC to the nearest tenths is approximately 4.50ºC
Approximately, what temperature is shown in the
Example 4: thermometer? (Round it off to the nearest whole
number)
40˚C 37˚C 5˚C
APPROXIMATING TIME, ANGLE AND RATE
Observe the picture below.
1. What time is shown in the 1st picture?
__________
10:05
2. What is the measure of the angle in the 2nd
71˚
picture? __________
3. What is the speed of the car as shown in the
3rd picture? ______
89 mph
In the pictures, the measure of time, angle, and speed of the
car are approximately 10:05, 71˚, and 89 mph.
Ana sleeps 9:30 pm and wakes up 5:46
Example 5: am. Approximately how many hours did
she sleep?
Approximately 8
hours.
Approximately, what is the measure of the angle
Example 6: below?
The given angle is less than
It is 12 of the right angle.
90˚.
The angle measures
approximately 45˚.
Example 7:
The Maligaya family pays an amount of ₱400.00 for their
monthly electric consumption. If they consume 70kWh for a
month, approximately how much is the cost per kWh?
To give us an approximate quotient of 400 by 70, divide 40 by
7 (remove one zero in both the numerator and denominator of
the original dividend and divisor). The answer is 5 and the
remainder is 5.
Approximately, the cost per kWh is ₱6.00.
PRACTICE: Approximate the measures of the following:
1. How wide is your window in meter?
2. Teacher Johann drives to school for 60 minutes at 66 km per
hour. Approximately how far is he from the school?
ANSWERS:
1. How wide is your window in meter? Answer may vary
2. Teacher Johann drives to school for 60 minutes at 66 km per
hour. Approximately how far is he from the school? 66km

CONVERTING MEASUREMENTS FROM ONE UNIT TO
ANOTHER
CONVERSION OF UNITS
expressing a given unit in another different unit
of measurement for the same quantity, typically
through multiplicative conversion factors.
METRIC PREFIX
a unit prefix that precedes a basic unit of
measure to indicate a multiple or sub multiple
of the unit.
Metric
Prefixes:
1 kilometer = 1,000 meters 1 kilogram = 1,000 grams 1 kiloliter = 1,000 liters
1 hectoliter = 100 liters
1 hectometer = 100 meters 1 hectogram = 100 grams
1 decaliter = 10 liters
1 decameter = 10 meters 1 decagram = 10 grams
1 decimeter = meter 100 centigrams = 1 gram 1,000 milliliters = 1 liter
10 decimeters = 1 meter
1 centimeter = meter
millimeter = meter
CONVERTING MEASUREMENTS FROM ONE UNIT TO
ANOTHER
In practice, it is often necessary to convert one metric measurement to
another unit—this happens frequently in the medical, scientific, and
technical fields, where the metric system is commonly used.
In the metric system, the length, weight and volume (capacity) has one
basic unit of measure: meter, gram, liter respectively. Conversions are
made by multiplying or dividing by factors of 10. It is as simple as
moving the decimal point to the right for smaller prefixes (deci-, centi-,
milli-) or to the left for larger prefixes (deca-, hecto-, kilo-).
Converting between measurements in the metric system is
simply a matter of identifying the unit that you have, the unit that
you want to convert to, and then counting the number of units
between them. A basic example of this is shown below.
To remember the proper decimal movement, arrange the prefixes
from largest to smallest:
CONVERSION OF LENGTH
EXAMPLE: Convert 1 kilometer to decimeters
ANSWER:
1 kilometer = 10,000 decimeters
You can also apply the rules of base 10 to use the “move the decimal”
shortcut method in this example. Notice thatmeter (m) is three places to
the right of kilometer (km); similarly, you move the decimal point three
places to the right when converting 32.5 kilometers to meters.
PRACTICE: Convert the following:
30 000
1. 30 km = ________ m
28
2. 2.8 cm = ________ mm

10. 105.38 cm = ________ km
CONVERSION OF VOLUME
EXAMPLE: How many decaliters are there in 0.5 deciliters?
One deciliter is 100 times smaller than a decaliter, so you move the
decimal point two places to the left to convert 0.5 deciliters to 0.005
decaliters.

CONVERTING BETWEEN MEASUREMENTS IN THE
ENGLISH SYSTEM
In this lesson, we will also learn how to convert one unit of measurement
in the English system to another. The conversion method is not as easy
as the metric system.
Conversion Ratio (or Unit Factor): While the Metric System
simply moves the decimal point to convert between its
measurements' prefixes, the English System requires a conversion
ratio (or unit factor) to move between measurements.
A conversion ratio (or unit factor) is a ratio equal to one. This
ratio carries the names of the units to be used in the conversion.
It can be used for conversions within the English and Metric
Systems, as well as for conversions between the systems. The
conversion ratio is based upon the concept of equivalent
values. In the example below, one foot is substituted for its
equivalent measure of 12 inches.
