PLATE EFFICIENCIES
PLATE
EFFICIENCIES
 Aim
• It is the translation for IDEAL PLATES to ACTUAL PLATES
• Same concept is applicable for Gas Absorption and
Distillation

 Background

• Efficiency is the measure of output to input

• Efficiency of any equipment/ process is representated by
“η”
Types Of Plate
Efficiencies
 Types
Three kinds of plate efficiencies are
used:
1) Overall efficiency
Local Efficiency
 concerned with entire column
1) Murphree efficiency Overall Efficiency
 concerned with a single plate
1) Local efficiency
 which pertains to a
specific location on a
single plate. Murphree Efficiency
Types Of Plate
Efficiencies
 OVERALL EFFICIENCY

 Overall efficiency denoted by ηo

 It is simple to use but is the least fundamental
 It is defined as: “the ratio of the number of ideal plates
needed in an entire column to the number of actual
plates”.
 Explanation: If 06 plates are called for and the overall
efficiency is 60%,
The number of actual plates = 6 / 0.60= 10
Types Of Plate
Efficiencies
 MURPHREE EFFICIENCY yn+1

n+1
Murphree Efficiency denoted by ηM
It is defined as: Vapor flow
yn
yn – yn+1
ηM = y*n – yn+1
n

where,
yn = actual concentration of vapor leaving plate n
yn+1 = actual concentration vapor entering plate n
y*n = concentration of vapor in equilibrium with liquid
leaving down-pipe from plate n
Types Of Plate
Efficiencies
 MURPHREE EFFICIENCY (..cont) yn+1

The Murphree efficiency is therefore n+1

the change in vapor composition
from one plate to the next DIVIDED
by the change that would have
yn
occurred if the vapor leaving were in y* n
equilibrium with the liquid leaving. n

 Important Point x* n
The liquid leaving is generally not
the same as the average liquid on
the plate.

Efficiencies y’n+1
 Local Efficiency
n+1
Local Efficiency denoted by η’
y’en y’
It is defined as: n

y’n – y’n+1
η’ = n
y’en – y’n+1
where,
y’n= conc. of vapor leaving specific location
on plate n Specific location

y’n+1= conc. of vapor entering plate n at same

location
y’en = conc. of vapor in equilibrium with liquid at
same location
