LIGHTNING
Lightning is a giant spark of electricity in the
atmosphere between clouds, the air, or the
ground. Lightning can occur between opposite
charges within the thunderstorm cloud (intra-
cloud lightning) or between opposite charges in
the cloud and on the ground (cloud-to-ground
lightning).
STATIC CHARGES
A static charge is formed whenever two surfaces
are in relative motion, for example, when a
liquid flows past the walls of a pipeline, when
liquid droplets or solid particles move through
the air, or when someone walks, gets up from a
seat, or removes an article of clothing.
ELECTROSOPE
The electroscope is an early scientific instrument
used to detect the presence of electric charge on
a body. It detects charge by the movement of a
test object due to the Coulomb electrostatic
force on it. The amount of charge on an object is
proportional to its voltage.
CAUSE OF
LIGHTNING
Lightning is an electrical discharge
caused by imbalances between storm
clouds and the ground, or within the
clouds themselves. Most lightning occurs
within the clouds. ... This heat causes
surrounding air to rapidly expand and
vibrate, which creates the pealing
thunder we hear a short time after seeing
a lightning flash.
LIGHTNING
CONDUCTOR
A lightning conductor is a device used to protect
buildings from the damaging effect of the
lightning. ... The lightning conductor works on the
principle of induction, such that when a charged
cloud passes by the building, the conductor gets
charge X opposite to that of the cloud through the
process of induction.
