• Austria
German, French, Italian and Romansh are
the main languages spoken.
Switzerland’s capital city is Bern.

Switzerland has lots of mountains.
Many people go to Switzerland to
ski and hike.
The Alps are a mountain range
that goes through Switzerland.
Switzerland's most famous mountain is the Matterhorn.
There are also valleys, lakes and meadows in Switzerland.
Fun Fact
There are over 1500 lakes in Switzerland. The largest is Lake Geneva.

In Switzerland, it is cold in the winter. In the mountains, there is often
snow through winter until late spring. The summer is usually warm.
Sports
Football, skiing, and ice hockey are Switzerland's favourite sports.
What to See and Do in Switzerland
The snow and mountains make Switzerland an ideal place for skiing.
During the winter, many tourists visit Switzerland to go skiing,
snowboarding and tobogganing.
Visitors also enjoy going to:
• museums, art galleries
and castles;
• the Swiss National Park;
• lakes where they can picnic,
swim and enjoy the scenery;
• the Swiss Grand Canyon.

What to See and Do in Switzerland
Traditional Swiss dishes sometimes include potatoes and cheese.
A traditional Swiss meal is cheese fondue. This is melted cheese with
bread cubes.

Chocolate and Cheese
Switzerland is famous for its chocolate and
cheese.
The Swiss eat more chocolate than any
other people. Swiss chocolate is said to be
the best in the world.
There are over 450 types of Swiss cheese.
The most well-known being Emmental. It
has large holes running through it.
Swiss Wildlife
Marmots are the largest member of
the squirrel family. They live in
burrows and have fur, short ears
and bushy tails. Marmots are
excellent diggers. They whistle to
warn each other of danger.
Chamois can be found in the
Alps. They have white markings
on their faces. Chamois also
have short, curved horns and are
excellent climbers.
Swiss Wildlife
Ulrich Inderbinen, a Swiss mountain guide, was known as the ‘King of the
Alps.’ He climbed the Matterhorn 370 times!
The money in Switzerland is called the Swiss franc.
One of the world’s longest staircases is in Switzerland.
The highest railway in Europe is in Switzerland.
