What is problem solving, and why is it
important in therapy?

 Process: Problem-solving involves identifying effective ways to


cope with everyday issues through a systematic process.
 Steps: It includes analyzing the problem, identifying coping
options, evaluating these options, making a decision, and
planning strategies for implementation.
 Applicability: Useful for a wide range of issues such as
depression, anxiety, anger, stress, medical conditions, addiction,
and family problems.
 Benefits: Teaches skills that help individuals feel more in
control of overwhelming life challenges.
 Outcome: Enhances practical problem-solving and emotion-
focused coping abilities, such as increasing control, reducing
stress, and fostering hopefulness.
When? (Indications/Contraindications)

 challenging concepts and beliefs when they are


inaccurate or when the situation cannot be
changed. In such cases, problem-solving becomes
necessary, especially when the root of the
problem is changeable. Problem-solving is
effective when we can clearly identify and
measure the problem. It works best when
practical solutions are available.
Examples of problems appropriate for
problem solving include

1. How to communicate with a partner about a difficult issue


2. How best to cope with the functional limitations of a medical condition
3. ) How to reduce financial distress
Note that you are not responsible for finding answers to these questions but
rather should aid the patient in finding his or her own answers. In this
manner you are a facilitator who possesses problem-solving skills.
