1.Introduction
 The function of Secondary Air Damper Control (SADC) System is to proportion
the total air around the firing elevations. The secondary air dampers located in
wind box apportions the total air between various elevations. Each elevation
has four corners.
 There are total 33 no of elevations consists of following Dampers–
• Fuel Air dampers – 8 elevations viz., Coal A, B, C, D,E,F,G,H
• Fuel Oil dampers – 4 elevations viz., AB,CD,EF,GH
• Auxiliary Air dampers-
• End Air dampers - 2 elevations viz., AA,HH
• Under Fire Air damper- 1 elevaion viz., AAA
• Auxiliary Air dampers- 3 elevations viz., BC,DE,FG
• Concentric Fired system dampers - 7 elevations viz., AB-B,BC-C,CD-
D,DE-E,EF-F,FG-G,GH-H
• Closed coupled Over fired air dampers – 2 elevations viz., CCOFA-A,
CCOFA-B
• Seperated Over fired air dampers - 6 elevations viz., LSOFA-A,B,C ,
HSOFA-A,,B,C

 The total combustion air flow supplied in the boiler consists of two parts, one,
the primary air, which is used for drying and transporting the coal from the
pulveriser through the coal piping into the furnace and is supplied by the
primary air fans and two, the secondary air sent through the four corners of
the wind box and is supplied by the FD fans.
Auxiliary Air / Concentric Fired System Damper Control

Control objective:
• Maintain proper windbox air flow distribution (i.e.
coordination of fuel/air admission).
• Provide overriding control in the event of high windbox to
furnace differential pressure.
• Provide damper bias on an elevation basis.
• Provide Operator selection of auxiliary air dampers for either
Straight or Concentric Air to control WB to furnace DP
Fuel Oil Damper Control – Oil

• The fuel oil dampers associated with either light oil/Heavy oil
firing is set to predetermined position to support oil firing by a
command “Position secondary air dampers for oil firing” from
FSSS.
• Those fuel oil dampers which are not positioned by FSSS
command will modulate identical to the Auxiliary air dampers.
Fuel Air Damper Control – Coal

Control objective:

• Position fuel air dampers to optimize combustion

• Provide option for bias on an elevation basis

• Incorporate BMS initiated commands

End Air Damper Control

Control objective:

• Maintain proper wind box air flow distribution

(i.e. coordination of fuel/air admission)

• Provide overriding control in the event of high wind box to

furnace differential pressure

• Provide elevation damper bias capability

Under Fire Air Damper Control

Control objective:

• Position Under fire air damper to optimize combustion

• Provide elevation damper bias capability

• Incorporate FSSS initiated commands

Over fired Air dampers
Purpose:

• The boiler is provided with the LNTFS-3A firing system including multiple firing zone
stoichiometry control with close-coupled and separated overfire air.
• Close-coupled OFA is a portion of the total combustion air which is introduced through
compartments at the top of each main windbox ( at four corners)
• Separated OFA is a portion of the total combustion air which is introduced through two
discrete windbox sections located in the upper furnace between the top of the main
windboxes and the furnace outlet plane
• Each SOFA windbox contains three OFA compartments with nozzle tips having adjustable
yaw and tilt positioning capability.

• Air staging: This in effect divides the furnace volume into three discrete zones viz., the
primary firing zone, the NOx reduction zone, and the final burnout zone.
The stoichiometric air ratio in each zone is defined and controlled by the total OFA
flow, the CCOFA vs. SOFA flow distribution and the final excess air ratio. This advanced air
staging approach provides for better control of NOx production through optimization of the
stoichiometric air ratio in each firing zone.
Close Coupled Over fire Air Damper Control

Control objective:
• Position overfire air dampers to minimize NOX production.
• Incorporate BMS initiated commands

Separated Over fire Air Damper Control

Control objective:
• Position separated overfire air dampers to minimize NOX production.
• Provide elevation damper bias capability.
• Incorporate BMS initiated commands
