proposal, and Gulliver‘s Travels
Gulliver‘s Travels
• Prose satire published in 1726
• Satirises both human nature and “travellers‘ tales“
literature subgenre
• English literature classic and Swift‘s best-known
work
• Divided into four parts
• Takes place from 1699 to 1715
Part I: A voyage to
Lilliput
• Lilliputs see him as a thread but take good care of
him
• He slowly gains their trust and is given his liberty
• Seizes enemie‘s boats but refuses to help the lilliputs
enslave them
• Gradually becomes the enemy of the emperor after
disobeying his demands
Part II: A voyage to
Brobdingnag
• Found by a farmer who uses him to make money
• Gulliver is not fed well and is overworked
• Farmer sells him to the queen
• Gulliver isn‘t treated badly but the giants don‘t see
him as a human being
• Carried away by an eagle, dropped into the ocean
and saved by sailors
Part III: A voyage to Laputa,
Balnibarbi, Luggnagg, Glubbdubdrib
and Japan
• Laputa is a floating island with people on it
• Only interested in maths and music
• Gulliver leaves shortly after arriving
• Balnibarbi is the land beneath Laputa
• Gulliver visits the academy
• Glubbdubdir is the island of magicians
• The governor has the power to call up any spirit
• Gulliver is confined to Luggnagg
• He visits the king and learns about immortal people
• Finally departs from Luggnagg to Japan and sets sail to
England
Part IV: A voyage to the Land of the
Houyhnhnms
• Saved by a Houyhnhnm after being attacked by a group of
yahoos
• He gets used to living with them and eventually no longer
wants to go back to England
• He is forced to leave and despite trying to avoid going back
home he is discovered by seamen and brought back to home
