ENGINEERING

DESIGN PROJECT

(Drainage Water Control and Treatment)

Dry Detention Pond Design
Project Assessment

• Project Presentation =10%

• Project Report = 50%
Total = 60%

Count as 6 % of your coursework

Problem

• A company decided to convert 90% of a forest catchment into a

plantation area. To protect the downstream regions, runoff should
be passed through a pond (to control the peak flow) via a grassed
floodway along the alignment of the existing stream. The floodway
should have low-flow pipe systems with a maximum capacity of
3.8 m3/s, which bypass the pond and combine the pond outflow in
the downstream floodway.
• Designed a dry detention pond to ensure the post-development
flows are not higher than pre-development flows.
Data/Information

• Land use: farm for dry crops/wet crops

• Return period (ARI): 10 years minor and 50 years major
• Catchment area: depend on your catchment (<100ha)
• Crop water requirement – refer to FAO
www.fao.org/docrep/X0490E/X0490E00.htm
• Hydrological/related data gathering
1. Rainfall intensity
2. Catchment drawing
3. Soil types
Dry-weather Flow and Wet-weather Flow
• Dry-weather Flow
• Dry-weather flow from an agricultural area consists of irrigation return (excess) water and
channel for the same areas it does not vary significantly and usually contains nutrients and
dissolved minerals as pollutants.
• Therefore the dry weather flow can pass the gross pollutant trap and sediment pond for
treatment.
• Wet-weather Flow
• Combination of irrigation return water and runoff due to rainfall.
• In Malaysia, it can be significant for quantity and quality control. High rainfall can cause flood
in downstream areas.
Water Quality: Efficacy of a retention pond in treating stormwater nutrients and sediment
Pond features
• Primary outlets • Bottom grades
• Should be design to cater minor and • Maximum 1% slope
major storm • Maximum Pond Depth
• Secondary outlets (Emergency spillway) • Should not excess 3 m under normal operating
conditions
• Design with minimum 100 years ARI
• Freeboard
• Bypass Flows • 0.3 m above the water surface
• To ensure the pond floor (grassed) is not
inundated by small storm. The minimum
amount of bypass = 1 month ARI.
• Use small pipe connected between pond
inlet and primary outlet
Task 1:
• Each group selects 1 type of upland crop.
• Calculate the crop water requirement
• Type of crops:
1. Pineapple
2. Tomato
3. Banana
4. Corn
Crop Water Demand

• The relationship between the reference grass crop and the crop actually
grown is given by the crop factor, Kc, as shown in the following formula:
ETcrop = ETo x Kc

Both ET crop and ETo are expressed in the same unit: usually in mm/day (as
an average for a period of one month) or in mm/month.

ETcrop = crop evapotranspiration or crop water need (mm/day)

Kc = crop factor

ETo = reference evapotranspiration (mm/day)

Irrigation Requirement
• Select the irrigation methods for your farm
• Surface Irrigation
• Basin
• Border
• Furrow
• Sprinkler Irrigation
• Drip Irrigation

• Calculate the Irrigation water requirement

Task 2:

• Identify catchment areas from Google Map. Trace and determine the catchment area.
• Find the rainfall intensity of the area and soil types
• Group 1: Sg. Perlis Catchment
• Group 2: Sg. Muda Catchment
• Group 3: Sg. Pedu Catchment
• Group 4: Sg. Beris Catchment
Task 3:

• Determine the design flows, Q using Rational Method

• Use CiA/360
• C from soil types
• i from IDF curve for the area
• Calculate tc with major and minor ARI
• A from catchment area
MSMA 2nd edition

2.pdf
Task 4

• Using design flow, Q in Task 3, determine the pond volume and pond area.
• Use Rational Hydrograph Method (RHM)
Task 5
-Refer to Chapter 7 in MSMA Ver 2
• Determine the following:
i) Depth of the pond (< 3 m)
ii) Pond grading
iii) Embankment top width
iv) Side slope
v) Bottom grades
vi) Freeboard
Task 6

• Draw the pond designed using suitable software.

• Plan view and side view.
• Can use AutoCAD or any related software
Task 7

• Submit the report and recorded video presentation by 14 July 2024 (Sunday).
• Late submission will be penalize.
Report

• The report should be not more than 15 pages.

• The dimension of the project report should be in A4 size.
• Please submit the report in e-learning UniMAP platform in pdf format.
Text Format

• One and a half spacing between lines should be used for typing the general
text.
• The general text shall be typed using the Font style ‘TIMES NEW ROMAN’
and Font size 12.
• New sections shall commence on new pages.
Drawings

• The drawings shall be in CAD format and in A3 size.

• Where appropriate, the drawing scale must be shown.
• The drawing shall also include a graphic scale to facilitate scaling when a
sheet is reproduced at a different size to the original.
• Have legend and suitable drawing frame/titleblock
Report Organization

• In order to complete your report, you will be given a template that you must
use. This template contains the following sections:
PAGE SECTION DESCRIPTION
Title Page Include the title of the report, authors, the class,
and date of submission.
ii Acknowledgement Use this section to thank those who provided any
(Optional) technical assistance. Make sure you are
careful to include all who provided you with
help.

iii Table of Content Include the name of each section/subsection and

the page number.
