What is Waste Management?
Waste management refers to the
collection, transportation, treatment, and
disposal of waste materials. It
encompasses a range of activities aimed
at reducing the negative impact of waste
on the environment and human health.
The goal is to handle waste efficiently and
sustainably, often by incorporating
methods such as recycling, composting,
and energy recovery.
Types of waste
Solid Waste:
• Solid waste refers to any material that is
discarded in a solid form. This includes
everyday items and materials that are
thrown away by households, businesses, and
industries.
• Examples: Household garbage (food scraps,
packaging), construction debris (concrete,
wood), old furniture, and electronics
3
Liquid Waste:
•Liquid waste is any form of waste that is in
liquid form, usually as a byproduct of
industrial, commercial, or residential
activities.
•Examples: Wastewater from households
(sewage), industrial effluent (oil, chemicals),
and stormwater runoff.
Gaseous Waste:
•Gaseous waste includes harmful gases that
are released into the atmosphere as a result
of industrial processes, combustion, or
transportation.
•Examples: Emissions from factories,

The Waste Hierarchy Overview
The waste hierarchy represents the best options for
managing waste:
1. Reduce
2. Reuse
3. Recycle
4. Recover
5. Dispose
6
• Reduce
Reduction involves minimizing the amount
of waste generated. Examples include
using fewer packaging materials, buying
durable products, and reducing
unnecessary consumption.
• Reuse
Reusing involves finding new purposes for
items instead of discarding them.
Examples include using reusable bags,
containers, or repurposing old furniture.
• Recycle
Recycling involves processing materials to
make new products. Examples include
recycling paper, plastic, and glass. Recycling
reduces the demand for raw materials and
decreases energy consumption.
• Recover
Recovery refers to extracting energy from
waste. Methods include waste-to-energy
plants, composting, and biogas generation,
which help reduce the volume of waste
while producing energy. 8
• Dispose
Disposal is the final option in waste management. It
involves placing waste in landfills or incinerating it.
Improper disposal can lead to environmental pollution.
