VISIBLE LIGHT

WHO DISCOVERED THE
VISIBLE LIGHT?
 Isaac Newton is the one who discovered the visible
light. In 1665, Isaac Newton, a young scientist at
Cambridge University in England, darkened his
room and made a hole in his window shutter,
allowing just one beam of sunlight to enter the
room. He then took a glass prism and placed it in
the sunbeam. The result was a spectacular
multicolored band of light just like a rainbow that
passed through the prism spread out into the colors
of red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet.
WHAT IS VISIBLE LIGHT?
 It is a type of electromagnetic radiation ,which is
transmitted in waves or particles at different
wavelengths and frequencies that the human eye
can view. The different wavelengths of visible
light are seen as the colors of the rainbow: red,
orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.
 The longest wavelengths (around
700 nanometers) are red and;
 The shortest wavelengths (390 nanometers) are
violet.
COLOR WAVELENGHT (NM) FREQUENCY (THz)

Violet-Indigo 390 to 455 nm 750 THz

Blue 455 to 492 nm 670 THz

Green 492 to 577 nm 610 THz

Yellow 577 to 597 nm 540 THz

Orange 597 to 622 nm 510 THz

Red 622 to 700 nm 480 THz

USES OF VISIBLE LIGHT
1. VISION
-Primarily, people uses
visible light in vision since only
that type of light that our eyes is
responsive to. Visible light is
utilized to give people’s eyes a
sensation of sight, enabling them to
visualize objects’ shape, color, and
appearance in their surroundings.
2. FIBER OPTIC COMMUNICATION
-Fiber optic communication is a method of
transmitting data using light, rather than
electricity like standard wires and cabling. Fiber
optic cables are used in different areas with the
largest being for telephones, the Internet, and
television.

3. PHOTOGRAPHY
-Cameras capture images by exposing film
or digital sensors to light, and the visible
spectrum is the range of wavelengths that most
photographic materials are sensitive to.
3. LIGHTING
- Visible light is used extensively for lighting
purposes. It is used in light bulbs, lamps, and other
lighting fixtures to illuminate homes, offices, and other
buildings.
4. COMMUNICATION
-For example, signal lamps are used to
communicate between ships at sea, and visual signals
are used in aviation to communicate with pilots.
5. HEALTH
-Visible light is used in phototherapy to treat
certain medical conditions such as neonatal jaundice
and skin disorders like psoriasis and vitiligo.
6. SRECTROSCOPY
- It is used in spectroscopy, which is the
study of the interaction between light and matter.
Spectroscopy is used in many fields, including
astronomy, chemistry, and biology.
7. ART AND DESIGN
-Artists and designers use the properties of
light to create visual effects, such as color, shadow,
and reflection.
8. ENTERTAINMENT
-Visible light is used in entertainment, such
as in stage lighting for concerts and theatrical
productions.
9. SECURITY
-Used in security cameras to capture images
of intruders or suspicious activity.
TRIVIAS:
 White Light is another term for visible light
 Visible light travels at 186,282 miles per second through space or
known as the speed of light
 Visible light is the only type of EM waves that we can see
 We can detect visible light because of cone-shaped cells in our
eyes.
 Our eyes can only detect wavelengths between 380 and 700
nanometers.
