What is Hiking?
Hiking, walking in nature as a recreational activity.
Especially among those with sedentary occupations,
hiking is a natural exercise that promotes physical
fitness, is economical and convenient, and requires no
special equipment. Because hikers can walk as far as
they want, there is no physical strain unless they walk
among hills or mountains.

Heart Health: Hiking, especially on trails with hills, is a great
cardiovascular workout that can help reduce the risk of heart disease
Muscle and Bone health: As weight-bearing exercise, hiking can help

osteoporosis.
Weight Management: Hiking can help with weight loss and
management as it is a form of physical exercise that burns calories.
Improved balance: Navigating through uneven terrains can help
improve your balance and coordination.
Mental Health: Being in nature while hiking can have a calming
effect on the mind, reducing stress and anxiety. It can also boost your
mood and creativity.
Immune System: Regular hiking can boost your immune system,
making you more resistant to disease.
Socializing: Hiking can be a social activity if done in groups, which
can improve your relationships and make the experience more
enjoyable.

Navigation tools – A map, compass, altimeter,
and/or GPS device can help you stay on track
and avoid getting lost.
Headlamp- it is important in case you end up
hiking longer than anticipated and it gets dark.
Sun protection- (sunblock, sunglasses, and hat)
these will protect you from harmful UV rays
First Aid kit- accidents can happen, it’s always
wise to have a basic first aid kit with bandages,
antiseptic wipes, tweezers, and any personal
medication
Multipurpose tool: A knife or multipurpose tool
can be useful for various situation, from cutting
piece of rope to repairing gear.
Fire starter- Matches, lighter, or fire starter can
be crucial in an emergency for warmth or
signaling for help.
Shelter- this could be simple as a large, sturdy
plastic bag or a lightweight emergency blanket. It
is useful incase you get stranded overnight.
Extra food and water- always bring more than
you think you’ll need in case your hike takes
longer than expected.
Appropriate clothing and footwear- wear layers so
you can adjust to changing weather conditions. Your
shoes should be sturdy, comfortable, and suitable for
the terrain you’ll be hiking on.
Backpack- to carry all your essentials. It should be
comfortable and have enough capacity for your gear.
o Remember, the gear you need may vary depending
on the length and difficulty of the hike, weather
conditions, and whether you’ll be hiking alone or in a
group. Always check the weather forecast and trail
conditions before you set off.
