RIZAL ENROLLS AT UST
Jose Rizal decided to enroll again to a university after finishing the first year
of a course in Philosophy and Letters (1877-1878).
Doña Teodora vigorously opposed the idea that Rizal pursue higher learning
in the university saying “Don’t send Jose, who already knows enough, to
Manila again. Knowing more, will tend to make the Spaniards cut off Jose’s
head.”
6th of April 1877
Rizal who was then nearly 16 years old, matriculated in the University of
Santo Tomas, taking the course on Philosophy and Letters because Don
Francisco Mercado like it.
During Rizal’s first school term in the University of Santo Tomas (1877-
1878), Rizal also studied in Ateneo taking vocational course leading to the
title of perito agrimensor (expert surveyor) issued on November 25, 1881.
Rizal excelled in all subjects in the surveying course in Ateneo, obtaining
gold medals in agriculture and topography.

In his second year at UST (1878-1879),
Rizal shifted his course to medicine.
It was during the following term (1878-1879) that Rizal, having received the
Ateneo Rector’s advice to study medicine.
Rizal felt the need to take up this course after learning about his mother’s
failing eyesight. He wanted to be a physician so that he could cure his
mother’s failing eyesight.

OTHER EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
Liceo Artistico-Literario (Artistic-Literary Lyceum) of Manila, a society
of literary artists, held a literary contest in the year 1879. Rizal, who was
then 18 years old, submitted a poem A La Juventud Filipina (To the
Filipino Youth). It is an inspiring poem of flawless form. Rizal beseeched
the Filipino youth to rise from lethargy, to let genius fly swifter than the
wind and descend with art and science to break the chains that have long
bound the spirit of the people.
Jose Rizal had produced many literary works including El Consejo de los
Dioses (The Councils of the Gods)- an allegorical drama which Rizal
entered in the literary contest of Artistic Literary Lyceum in 1880 to
commemorate the fourth centennial of the death of Cervantes, it was a
literary masterpiece based on the Greek classics.

Rizal’s Activism on UST
Rizal displayed his leadership in student activism when he was pursuing
Philosophy and Medicine at UST.
He also organized a society called compañerismo (fellowship) -described
as an organization promoting civic and patriotic education among its
members, and mutual protection and support.
Rizal criticized the humiliating treatment of brown Filipinos by the
Dominican mentors.
Favoritism and skin color – criteria for academic performance.
Did Rizal enjoyed studying in UST?
The Dominican professors were hostile to him.
Filipino students were racially discriminated by the Spaniards.
The method of instructions was absolete and repressive.
In 1882, after finishing the 4th year of the medical course at the University of
Santo Tomas, Rizal decided to go to Europe to complete his medical studies
and prepare himself for the great task of liberating the country from Spanish
tyranny.
