QUESTION
• What is Radiation?
• What are the three
methods of heat
transfer?
Try placing your finger on
your throat while saying “I
am handsome” or “I am
beautiful” twice. What did
your finger feel? Were
there vibrations in the
throat?
Define sound;
explain sound production in the
Learning human voice box, and how pitch
loudness and quality of sound
Objectives Rules
vary from one person to
another;
create musical instrument and
harmonious music out of
indigenous materials.
MY OWN
SOUNDING BOX!
MATERIALS:
• shoe box
• variety of elastic or rubber bands (thin and
thick)
• extra cardboard – optional
• pair of scissors or cutter
• ruler
PROCEDURES
1. Cut and design
your shoe box as
shown in Figure 2.
PROCEDURES
2. Put the rubber bands around the box.
Make sure that the rubber bands are almost
equally spaced and that the rubber bands
thickness from the lower end to the other
end of the box.
PROCEDURES
3. Use your finger to pluck
each rubber band. Listen
to the sound produced.
PROCEDURES
4. This time use the fingers of one hand to
stretch one of the elastics. Pluck the elastic
with the fingers of the other hand and
observe.
5. Repeat step 4 with the other elastic bands.
GUIDE QUESTIONS
1. What physical signs did you observe when you
plucked each band. Did you hear any sound?
What produced the sound?
2. How different are the sounds produced by each
band with different thickness?
GUIDE QUESTIONS
3. Are there changes in the note when you
plucked the stretched band?
4. Arrange the elastics in sequence from the
highest note to the lowest note produced.
SOUND
WAVE
SOUND WAVES
It is an example of
longitudinal waves
creating from a vibrating
source.
SOUND WAVES
It is also known as
Mechanical Wave.
SOUND WAVES
To make vibrations
become sound, three
basic elements must be
present.
SOUND WAVES
• SOURCE
• MEDIUM
• DETECTOR/RECEIVER
Detector/receiver
The object that responds to
the wave is the detector or
receiver
medium
is the vehicle through
which the wave travel from
one point to the next.

SOUND WAVES
Speed of sound
The speed of sound is different in
various materials
In which medium do you
think will sound travel the
fastest?
In which medium do you think will
sound travel the fastest?
Slight tapping on the table can produce sound
that can be heard clearly on the other end of the
table. This shows that sound waves can also
travel through wood or solid. Sound is more
pronounced in solids than in the air. This also
means that sound is heard louder when it
propagates in solids than in air.
In which medium do you think will
sound travel the fastest?
Why sound travels fastest in solids and
slowest in gases?
It is because of arrangement and spacing of
particles in each medium.
Arrangement of particles in each
medium
CHARACTERISTICS
OF SOUND WAVES
• PITCH
• LOUDNESS
• TIMBRE
PITCH
Highness or lowness of sound.
The frequency of waves dictates
the pitch of a sound.
PITCH
A B
BECAUSE IT HAS A HIGHER NUMBER
OF VIBRATIONS PER SECOND

AUDIBLE FREQUENCIES

ULTRASONIC FREQUENCIES
Above 20,000 Hz
INFRASONIC FREQUENCIES
Below 20 hz
PITCH
50,000 Hz 100,000 Hz
LOUDNESS
Refers to how soft or how
intense the sound.
Can be determined by the
amplitude of the sound waves.
LOUDNESS
LOUDNESS
High amplitude sounds usually carry large energy
and have higher intensity while Lower amplitude
sounds carry lower energy and have lower intensity
LOUDNESS
Sound intensity
can be measured
using
OSCILLOSCOP
E.
LOUDNESS
Decibel (dB) – unit of
intensity level for
sound.

0 dB to 120 dB
THRESHOLD OF HEARING

THRESHOLD OF PAIN
120 dB
LOUDNESS
Consider as a psychological
sensation that differs from different
people.
LOUDNESS
Noise is a wave that is
not pleasing to the
senses.
LOUDNESS
Music is a special sound
that forms a pattern and is
appealing to our sense of
hearing.
TIMBRE
Tone quality
Used in differentiating two
different sounds that have the
same pitch and loudness.
TIMBRE
Did you know that…
Humans use sound waves in
communicating with each other.
The production of sound/human
voice is attributed into three
parts.
Did you know that…
1. the lungs that produce sufficient airflow and air
pressure;
2. the vocal folds, within the larynx that are
responsible for producing the sound; and
3. the articulators (parts of vocal tract such as tongue,
palate, lips) that articulate and filter the sound
emanating from the larynx.
How do we hear sound?
The human ear and the animal
ear are very sensitive sound
detectors. The ear is a part of the
peripheral auditory system.
How do we hear
Sound?
How do we hear sound?
Ear is divided into 3 major parts.
• Outer ear
• Middle ear
• Inner ear
OUTER EAR
Auricle (pinna) – collects the
sound waves
Ear canal – this is where the
sound waves move or travel.
MIDDLE EAR
Eardrum – end of the ear
canal, it separates the outer and
inner ear physically.
MIDDLE EAR
Hammer, Incus and Stirrup
– 3 tiny bones connected to
eardrum that vibrate the sound
waves to the cochlea.
INNER EAR
COCHLEA – snail shaped liquid
filled organ, it transform sound waves
in electrical signals and sense them to
the brain through the;
INNER EAR
AUDITORY NERVE – the brain
interprets this signals as sound that
we are able to recognized and
understand.
Which medium will
sound travel the
fastest?
What are the
characteristics of
sound?
Sound plays a vital role in our
daily living. Communication is
one among of its uses. Can we
also use sound in emergency
response?
