• Water transportation is the intentional movement of
water over large distances. Methods of transportation
fall into three categories: Aqueducts, which include
pipelines, canals, tunnels and bridges. Container
shipment, which includes transport by tank truck, tank
car, and tank ship. There exists 5 types of ware based

• Transporting people and goods over inland waterways,
such as rivers and canals, can decrease road traffic,
accidents and pollution while increasing cross-border
trade.
• In India there exists an excellent network of water based
transportation. This is applicable on all the different water
bodies let them be on lakes, rivers, ponds, seas, backwater
water as well as oceans in the form of large oceanliners.
• Inland waterways consist of the Ganges-Bhagirathi-
Hooghly rivers, the Brahmaputra, the Barak river, the
rivers in Goa, the backwaters in Kerala, inland waters in
Mumbai and the deltaic regions of the Godavari-Krishna

waterways, and (b) oceanic waterways. Inland
waterways are among the chief mode of transport
before the advent of railways. Oceanic routes play an
important role in the transport sector of India's
economy.

• TO promote Inland Water Transport (IWT) in the
country, 111 waterways (including 5 existing and 106
new) have been declared as National Waterways
(NWs) under the National Waterways Act, 2016 which
came into effect from 12th April, 2016
• West Bengal, with approximate 4.6 thousand km has
the largest navigable waterways state in the country
(Surveyed at the end of the fiscal year 2020).
• In India, the inland waterways are provided by rivers
such as Ganga, Brahmaputra, Godavari, Krishna,
Brahmani, Barak, and canals like the East-West
canal, West-coast canal, Buckingham canal, Damodar
Valley Corporation canal, and the Sundarban areas.

• Inland Waterways Authority of India
• Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) was
constituted in October 1986, for the development
and regulation of inland waterways for shipping and
navigation. The Authority undertakes various
infrastructure development works on national
waterways. It also carries out feasibility studies and
prepares proposals for declaration of other
waterways as National Waterways. It also assists
States in development of IWT sector and provides
subsidy to IWT operators for acquiring IWT fleet
for transportation of cargo and passengers.

• Inland Water Transport (IWT) is a fuel efficient, environment friendly
and cost effective mode of transport having potential to supplement the
over burdened rail and congested roads. For this, however, it is
necessary that IWT mode is developed with public funding at least to a
threshold level at which private sector would get attracted to this mode.
In the 19th century and first half of 20 th century, IWT was an important
mode of transport and navigation by power crafts/country boats played
significant role in the development of trade and commerce along several
rivers and canals. The advent of railways and extension of its network
made a dent in share of water transport in India. Rapid growth of roads,
coupled with inadequate development of IWT sector over the years
gave a decisive set back to IWT and in the later years of 20 th century,
except in a few areas namely, Assam, Goa, Kerala, Mumbai,West
Bengal, and some other coastal areas (where it has natural advantage
and no developmental intervention was needed), the IWT sector was

wristbands.
• It comes as no surprise that the ship's captain has the
biggest salary from working on a cruise ship. The
master of the vessel has a huge responsibility for ship
safety for crew and passengers along with navigation.
The captain can earn almost $100,000 manually
depending on the cruise line and experience.
