RETRO VERSUS
UAL LEVEL 3 ESPORTS YR1 – THE FINAL MAJOR PROJECT
SECONDARY
RESEARCH: THE
CONSOLE
• The super Nintendo entertainment system (SNES) is a 16-
bit video game console developed by Nintendo that was
originally released in 1990 in Japan and South Korea. With
it being a quick and massive success, it further expanded to
North America in 1991, Europe and Oceania in 1992 and
1993 in South America.
• The console introduced advanced graphics and sound
capabilities that were a pioneer of the gaming world.
SECONDARY
RESEARCH: THE
CONSOLE
• The success in North America is only half of
the success with the rest of the world included
they sold more than 49 million units whilst
their competitor the Sega genesis sold just
over 30 million units worldwide with 17
million of them being sold in Japan alone.
• The success of the console continued from
1990 until 1998 when Europe was the first
continent where the console was
first discontinued with North America being
next a year later. It was slowly discontinued
worldwide until May 2005 where the
discontinuation in the UK was seen as the end
of the Snes
SECONDARY
RESEARCH: THE
GAME
• Super Mario Kart is a kart racing game
based of Nintendo's Mario series and is
the original Mario Kart in the Mario Kart
series. It was made for the SNES and it
was originally released in Japan in 1992
and later North America and the UK.
• It was a good addition to the already
great Mario series, and it later became
the 4th most sold game for the console
selling 8.76 million copies. With heavy
demand from fans the game was re-
released on the Wii 17 years later in 2009
and on 3DS's in 2013.
SECONDARY
RESEARCH: THE GAME
• However, that is not the end that was just the beginning if you
include later versions of the games that was on different
consoles such as the switch, the Wii, Wii U and 3Ds then total
copies sold is well over 180 million and total revenue made is
well over 9.6 billion.
• Mario series characters have made cameos in different games
such as 'SSX on Tour' and 'NBA Street V3.' The genre-
spanning nature of the Mario series that was sparked off by the
success of Super Mario Kart has been described as key to the
success and longevity of the Nintendo franchise.
SECONDARY RESEARCH: THE FORMAT
EXAMPLE 1
- ON THIS SLIDE PROVIDE AN EXAMPLE OF A SHOW WITH A SIMILAR FORMAT TO THE EXAMPLE PROVIDED
• Example: https://youtu.be/OzIi9jZE20M?si=bDM8jgq5KhuBkt3d
- WHAT DOES YOUR GROUP LIKE? WHY?
Our group liked many aspects of the video such as the theme of the border as the theme of the border is like the game they are playing
whilst the audio and video quality of their video is something we will try and implement to ours as the gameplay was smooth and the audio
was very consistent.
- WHAT DOESN’T YOUR GROUP LIKE? WHY?
For the negatives we believe the face cams were too big and chunky and the presenters were very dry and seemed to not
have much banter and chemistry.
- WHAT COULD YOU USE IN YOUR OWN SHOW? HOW?
As stated, before we will try and implement the audio and visual quality they had as it were very smooth and appealing but
we will also learn from them and include more humour in our gameplay which will make the video more appealing to the
viewers and we will fix and adjust our face cam sizes so it seems more natural.
SECONDARY RESEARCH: THE FORMAT
EXAMPLE 2
- ON THIS SLIDE PROVIDE AN EXAMPLE OF A SHOW WITH A SIMILAR FORMAT TO THE EXAMPLE PROVIDED
- Example - Jynxzi vs Shroud 1v1
- WHAT DOES YOUR GROUP LIKE? WHY?
-Versus format – seeing as our competition is against each other this is an aspect that really fits our situation well.
-Humour – no matter the game or format there was going to be humour.
-competitive aspect, tied in with banter-like humour.
- Things we didn't like:
-The Duration, the 1v1's go on for upwards of an hour.
- WHAT COULD YOU USE IN YOUR OWN SHOW? HOW?
-A lot of energy and commentary. Especially after seeing the previus years examples, everyone seemede to agree that the more energetic andf involved
a commentator was, the better the video.
VERSUS FORMAT
-Versus format – seeing as our competition is against each other this is an aspect that really fits our
situation well. Jynxzi focuses on his custom versus game modes as he either plays in these 1 v 1's
himself or commentates as the host.
HUMOUR AND PRESENTATION
-Humour – no matter the game or format there was going to be humour. It was something both players had agreed
upon. We want the energy of the video to be positive and more fun if anything, sort of like in the video example I
had chosen.
OTHER ASPECTS
-competitive aspect, tied in with banter-like humour. People really resonate with these aspects in jynxzis videos.
SECONDARY RESEARCH: THE FORMAT
EXAMPLE 3
- ON THIS SLIDE PROVIDE AN EXAMPLE OF A SHOW WITH A SIMILAR FORMAT TO THE EXAMPLE PROVIDED
- Example: Kirsten Ria vs Chocolate Kieran with Frankie Ward - VERSUS - gTV
- WHAT DOES YOUR GROUP LIKE? WHY?
- The explanation before the games they'll be playing.
- WHAT DOESN’T YOUR GROUP LIKE? WHY?
- In this video there is no background music during the actual gameplay which really throws me off.
- Some moments background audio/speech can be heard behind the presenters voices
- WHAT COULD YOU USE IN YOUR OWN SHOW? HOW?
- Cameras footage on the corresponding players side to show who's who in the game.
PRIMARY
RESEARCH
As a team we've decided that to gather our own primary research, the best route to go down, would be
to produce surveys, gather study groups, This would contain information about our tasks leading up to
our final piece.
EXPLORING POST-PRODUCTION
TECHNIQUES
Another aspect we would use to research, would be exploring specific techniques about the post-
production and editing phase. For example, looking at more premiere pro tutorials that will
assist us, particularly when editing our final major project, for year 1.
PRIMARY RESEARCH CONCLUSION
To conclude our primary research, it is important to look at other examples of the final major projects
from the second years. From this we can look into the previous years' work and analyse it, this would
include pointing out the positives and negatives which would benefit us as we can avoid the flaws and
magpie the more favourable aspects.

- A sign with the BPC logo on to promote us
We would also need props, this would include...
- Wearable props to maybe give the video a bit of humor
- And other types of toys or collectables to have in the background too.
INTENDED
Targeting an audience is crucial for content creating and video promotion, without knowing what your aiming for, its
AUDIENCE impossible to make a good video...
IDEAL AUDIENCE
- The ideal audience/viewers, would consist of teenagers or young adults from our
generation, them being the audience most likely to follow an esports team
on social media platforms.
- We must create something that is a few generations behind us, in this case retro
versus.
- This means that we will put something forward across to the younger generation,
something from the older generation, and make it entertaining some way.
Therefore, you must be wondering...
- How will we achieve this?
- Why are we aiming this episode at our audience?
WHY ARE WE AIMING THIS EPISODE AT
OUR AUDIENCE?
We are aiming this sort of episode at our audience because...
- We believe it will give a different aspect to games for our young
audience
- We want to show how games have changed from a few decades
ago to now
- We will learn about the retro game, mario kart, and put forward
the informnation whilst making it entertaining.
HOW WILL WE ACHIEVE OUR AIMS?
With the aim to create something "outdated" into something watchable for
modern viewers we MUST include these few things...
- It MUST be entertaining
- It MUST be bearable to hear and look at
- It MUST be timed and put together well
Our team have also created our own ideas to use in our retro versus
episode...
- This could include using popular memes
- Using props to give the video a bit more humour, like wearinbg a
princess peach crown to represent my character I will be using.m
