Internet of Things - Definition, Vision, Concept and Applications
Internet: A vast global network of connected servers, clouds, computers, tablets,
mobiles, devices and systems
ABV-IIITM GWALIOR
Uses the Internationally used protocols and connecting systems.
Enables sending, receiving, or communicating the information, messages,
alerts, ……
Between devices, sensors, servers Cloud services, applications, business
processes……
Thing: refers to a physical object, an action, idea, situation or activity, in case
when we need not be precise.
Over 9 billions things are connected to internet till now (20b in future)

Internet + Things = Internet of Things (IoT)
ABV-IIITM GWALIOR
IoT Dr. Pinku Ranjan
The network of physical objects or "things" embedded with electronics,
software, sensors etc.
Connected so as to enable achieving greater value and offer service by
exchanging data with the manufacturer, operator and/or other connected
devices.
ABV-IIITM GWALIOR
Internetwork of things is not a single technology.
Physical devices can be of different types of physical devices having different
configurations, different specifications and so on.
Each of these supported through different other systems such as cloud
technology, big data machine, learning networking computer vision and all
these different technologies from electrical sciences and some from even
mechanical sciences are required in order to build IoT.

IoT Enablers:
RFID: Radio Frequency Identification
ABV-IIITM GWALIOR
Concept of IoT started with things with the communicating devices for the identity,
called RFIDs
RFIDs connect to Internet
Nanotechnology: Nano capsules, Nano sensors
Sensors
Smart Networks
IoT Dr. Pinku Ranjan
Smart Hyper-connected Devices:
ABV-IIITM GWALIOR
Hyperconnectivity: ‘use of multiple systems and devices to remain constantly
connected to networks, social networks and streams of information’
Smart devices constantly connect to networks
For example, a streetlights network constantly connected to a central controlling
station/server; Hyperconnected RFIDs
IoT Dr. Pinku Ranjan
IoTs Vision:
ABV-IIITM GWALIOR
A vision where things (wearable, watch, alarm clock, home devices, surrounding
objects with) become smart and behave alive through sensing, computing and
communicating systems.
A vision where embedded devices interact with remote objects or persons through
connectivity, for examples, using Internet or Near Field Communication or other
technologies.
IoT Dr. Pinku Ranjan
Characteristics of IoT:
Efficient, scalable and associated architecture.
ABV-IIITM GWALIOR
Unambiguous naming and addressing
