Evaluation on Functions
Evaluating a function means replacing the variable
in the function, in this case x, with a value from the
function’s domain and computing for the result.
• To denote that we are evaluating f at a for some a
in the domain of f, we write f(a).

ON THE BOARD:
Evaluate the following functions at x = 1.5
(a) f(x) = 2x + 1
(b) q(x) = x2 – 2x + 2
(c) g(x) =
(d) r(x) =
ON THE BOARD:
Find the value: x = 0, x = -2
1. f(x) = 3x2 - 4x + 9 f(0) = 9 f(-2) = 29
2. h(x) = 4x3 - 6x - 12 h(0) = -12 h(-2) = 32
3. g(x) = 5x + 4 g(0) = 4 g(-2) = -6
4. f(x) = x2 + 5x f(0) = 0 f(-2) = -6
Drill : Group Activity
Find my value:
1. f(x) = 2x2 - 3x + 4 , f(0)? f(0) = 4
2. h(x) = x3 - 3x - 3 , h(-2) h(-2) = -5
3. g(x) = 6x - 4 , g(3) g(3) = 14
4. f(x) = 5x2 + 3x - 6, f(-3) f(-3) = 30
Let’s check for your understanding!
B. Evaluate the following:
1. f(z) = z2 - 5z + 2 f(-2) f(-2) = 16
2. h(x) = 3x - 4 f(0) f(-0) = -1

3. g(x) = 2x3 + 3x - 1 f(-3) f(-3) = -64
4. f(x) = x4 + 6x3 -3 f(-1) f(-1) = -8
Assignment:
A. Find the following:
g(x) = x + 1 f(x) = x - 1
1. (g + f) (x)
4. (g ÷ f) (x)
2. (g - f) (x) 5. (g f) (x)
3. (gf) (x)
