Data Processing

The document discusses a university course on software applications and network systems used in seagoing ships. The course covers data processing mechanisms, including: [1] Explaining how raw data is converted to machine-readable form and processed by computers; [2] Operating word processing applications to prepare reports and documents; [3] Describing the data processing cycle that converts raw input data into usable outputs through collection, filtering, analysis and presentation. The document outlines different types, methods and tools for data processing, and concludes with dividing students into groups to present topics from the lesson.

UNIVERSITY OF CEBU

Maritime Education Program

Software Applications and Network

System used in Seagoing Ships

Course: ICT – Maritime Information, Communications and Technology with Networking

Schedule: 4 hours / week (Lec & Lab)

Instructor: OIC-NW Constantino Rosas II

Data Processing Mechanism
Learning Outcome:
At the end of the lesson, the student should be able to:

• Explain the data processing, and manipulation of data by a

computer, including the conversion of raw data to machine
readable form, the flow of data through the CPU and memory to
output devices, and formatting or transformation of output, within
acceptable industry guidelines.

• Operate the word processing application for the preparation of

reports and relevant documents in the engine and deck operation,
within acceptable industry guidelines.
Data Processing Mechanism
• Data in its raw form is not useful to any organization. Data
processing is the method of collecting raw data and translating it
into usable information.
• The raw data is collected, filtered, sorted, processed, analyzed,
stored, and then presented in a readable format.
• Data processing converts the data into readable formats like
graphs, charts, and documents, where end-users can understand
and use the data.
Data Processing Cycle
• The data processing cycle consists
of a series of steps where raw data
(input) is fed into a system to
produce actionable insights (output).

• Each step is taken in a specific

order, but the entire process is
repeated in a cyclic manner.
Types of Data Processing
• There are different types of data processing based on the source
of data and the steps taken by the processing unit to generate an
output.

⮚ Batch Processing
⮚ Real Time Processing
⮚ Online Processing
⮚ Multiprocessing
⮚ Time-sharing
Data Processing Method
• There are three main data
processing methods:

⮚ Manual Data Processing

⮚ Mechanical Data Processing

⮚ Electronic Data Processing

Data Formatting
• Once raw data has been processed and
an output is made, we need to handle
the output data.
• There are a lot of data formatting tools
readily available for end-users to utilize
and make and output according to their
needs.
• One of the most popular tool is
Microsoft Office, which has been used
for decades by a lot of users.
Group Presentation!
• Divide the Class into 5 groups.

• Each group to present the following topics:

⮚ G1: Data Processing Cycle

⮚ G2: Types of Data Processing
⮚ G3: Data Processing Method
⮚ G4: Raw Data to Machine readable Form
⮚ G5: Tools to Format / Transform Data
