Taoism

Taoism is a religious belief that stems from Chinese customs and worldviews
that originated about 2000 years ago.

Daoism is the way that Taoism is better pronounced in English.

China
What Is Taoism?
Taoism is about the Tao, which translates as ‘the Way’.
The Tao is not easy to describe so Taoists prefer not to describe it. Instead they
focus on living a simple and balanced life that is in harmony with nature.
The Tao
Probably the best way to describe the Tao is as the
ultimate creative principle of the universe.

Taoists believe that all things are tied together and

linked in the Tao.
Balance

Taoists believe that when people

do things through words, thoughts
or actions, it can make things in
the real world change.

This is why Taoists live their lives

in the best way that they can.
They live their lives trying to find
balance.

This symbol is called yin yang.

Talk About It! It is the symbol of Taoism and shows
Can you name some that opposites balance and rely on each
other opposites? other. This could represent the balance
between day and night, or light and
dark.
Living In Harmony

People who follow Taoism live

in harmony and peace and find
ways to reduce stress. They
believe that if people live in
harmony this will have a
positive effect on the wider
world.
Talk About It!
What things can people
do to reduce stress in
their lives?
Taoists take part in martial arts, feng shui,
yoga, meditation, massage and breathing
exercises to reduce stress and bring harmony so
that they link with the Tao.
Gods of Taoism
Taoists do not believe in a single god. However, they do have many gods that
are in other religions. Taoists believe that these gods are part of the universe
which makes them part of the Tao.

The gods in Taoism have certain jobs to do and are called by these titles
instead of a godly name.

Kitchen God
The ‘Kitchen God’ is called Zao Shen. Taoists believe
that his job is to watch families and report back to the
Jade Emperor on how they have behaved during the
Chinese New Year. In the
hope that it will stop him talking about them, Taoists
leave an offering of sticky rice to Zao
Shen at Chinese New Year.
The Origins of Taoism
Taoists believe that an emperor of China, Huang Di, visited a hermit and
asked him a question.
Initially, the hermit didn’t want to answer the question but eventually he
did. The hermit’s answer gave Huang Di wisdom
that changed the way he ruled his people. The answer was the Tao.
He used the wisdom of the Tao to create
harmony in himself and for his kingdom.
He followed the way of nature and
balance.

Emperor Huang Di became known as the Yellow

Emperor by the people in his kingdom because he
was so kind and compassionate.

Taoists believe that he is the greatest Emperor

China has ever had.
The Book of Taoism
Taoism doesn’t have a holy book like other religions but it does have a key
book. It is called the Tao Te Ching and was created over 2000 years ago.

Lao Tzu is believed to have been an ancient

Chinese philosopher who Taoists believe
wrote the Tao Te Ching more than 2500
years ago. The name ‘Lao Tzu’ is actually a
title meaning Old Master, and some think it
represents a group of wise elders rather than
one man.

Taoists believe that the Tao Te

Ching is the guide to living a
spiritual and good life.
