INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES

•At the end of this lesson, the students should be

able to:
 Explain the Climate change.
 Discuss the Causes of Climate change
 Be introduced the principles of environmental awareness
 Identify practical ways save Environment
CLIMATE CHANGE
Climate change refers to long-term shifts
in temperatures and weather patterns. These
shifts may be natural such as through variations
in the solar cycle, but since the 1800’s human
activities have been the main driver of climate
change, primarily due to burning fossis fuels like
coal, oil, and gas. The elements that determine
climate change through time as well as from
place to place. Indirect evidence of climatic
trends in the distant past is revealed in fossils,
lake and ocean beds, peat bogs, glacial deposits,
and soil’s.

CAUSES OF CLIMATE CHANGE:

Human Activity- People burn fossil fuels and convert land from
forests to agriculture. Since the beginning of the beginning of the
industrial revolution, people have burned more and more fossils
fuels and changed vast areas of land from forests to farmland.

Greenhouse Gasses- Are transparent to incoming ( short wave )

radiation from the sun but block infrared ( long- wave ) radiation
from leaving the earth’s atmosphere. This greenhouse effect traps
radiation from the sun and warms the planet’s surface.

Heat- trapping Green house Gasses and the

earth’s climate- The Greenhouse effect is the way in which heat
is trapped close to earth’s surface by “ Greenhouse Gasses “. These
heat- trapping gasses can be thought of as a blanket wrapped around
Reflectivity or Absorption of the
sun’s energy- Approximately 70 of incoming
radiation is absorbed by the atmosphere and the
earth’s surface while around 30 is reflected back
to space and does not heat the surface.

Changes in the earth’s orbit and

rotation- Changes in the earth’s orbit around
the sun and changes in the tilt and wobble of the
earth’s can lead to cooling or warming of the
earth’s climate because they change the amount
of energy our planet receives from the sun.
Variation in Solar Activity- It has
been suggested that changes in solar
output might affect our climate- both
directly, by changing the rate of solar
heating of the earth’s and atmosphere
and indirectly by changing cloud
farming processes.
Changes in the Earth’s Reflectivity- Our
planets absorbs light and radiation back into space
( known as earthshine ) but earth’s reflectivity is
reducing over time, according to new research, rising
sea temperatures have reduced reflective low- lying
cloud coverage.
Volcanic Activity- Volcanoes can impact
climate change. During major explosive
eruption’s huge amounts of volcanic gas,
aerosol droplets, and ash are injected into.
The stratosphere, injected ash falls rapidly
from the stratosphere most of it is removed
within several day to weeks and has little
impact on climate change.
The Greenhouse Effect
The greenhouse effect is a process that occurs when
energy from a planet’s host star goes through the
planet’s atmosphere and heat’s the planet’s surface,
but greenhouse gases in the atmosphere prevent some
of the heat from returning directly to space, resulting
a warmer planet. The greenhouse effect is a process by
which thermal radiation from a planetary atmosphere
warms the planet’s surface beyond the temperature it
would have in the absence of it’s atmosphere.
Global Warming
Global warming is a term for the observed century-scale rise in
the average temperature of the Earth’s climate system and its
related effects. Scientists are more than 95percent certain that
nearly all of global warming is caused by increasing concentrations
of greenhouse gases. (GHGs) and other human-caused emissions.
Within the earth’s atmosphere, accumulating greenhouse
gases like water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide,
and ozone are the gases within the atmosphere that absorb and
emit heat radiation. Increasing or decreasing amounts of
greenhouse gases within the atmosphere act to either hold in or
release more of the heat from the sun.
ENVIRONMENTAL
AWARENESS
Environmental Awareness

However, to make an impact, we must be aware of the problems and
solutions. We will starts with what we are doing wrong and move toward what
needs to be done to improve our environment. Some ways to take care of our
environment is to practices recycling, follow proper garbage disposal protocol,
avoid using our cars too much and rely more on public transportation instead.
 Every day we hear about how our planet is changing. The need for
environmmental protection arises from the changes in rising carbon dioxide
levels, which cause drastic changes in our environment. The rising levels of
carbon dioxide result in changes in the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide traps heat
and makes it difficult for plants to grow.

Importance of Environmental Awareness

We wish to have a good quality of life for our children. We can ensure our
children and future generations enjoy the best quality of life.
ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS

Highlight environmentally friendly working practices relating to

•Waste
•Energy
•Transport
•Water isssues
Examples of environmental Issues

Oil drilling- This issue is one that

causes a great deal of environmental destruction.

Production of plastic Goods- Currently our

society creates a great deal of waste and much of
the waste consists of plastic.
Deforestation- Millions of acres of
forest are cut down for industrial
benefit, such as large scale farming,
oil mining, and the production pf
paper goods. Deforestation causes
wildlife and biodiversity extinction
because the loss of habitat threatens
many species existence.

THREE STANDARDS of
SUSTAINABILITY
•Economic
•Social
•Environment
Major Impacts of Environmental change
• Global Warning
• Sea level rise
• Ocean acidification
• Health
• Temperature rise
• Extreme weather even
• Deforestation
• Ecosystem strain
• Loss of Biodiversity
.

Ways to Save Environment

• Plant more • Change habit

tree

• Save water

• Walk more, • Reduce, reuse,

drive less recycle
( Plant more tree )- Plant a tree every month
encourage your friends and colleagues to join
you. Have more and more trees planted and
there will come a day when you have a green
stretch of land.

( Walk more drive less )- Choose to Walk short

distances instead of taking your car every
time. Go walking to the gym, to work go
walking to run, errands. Or us a bicycle. Both
cycling and walking are good exercises. And
each time you avoid using your car, you are
contributing to reducing air pollution. You are
saving fuel, saving money and getting a good
workout to. Now isn’t that beneficial for both
( Save Water ) – Water is a very important natural
resource its we who waste it pollute it. The simplest ways
to save water turn off the water taps after use. Use of
flushes and showers can lead to wastage of water. Use
only as much water as necessary. Do not dump garbage
down a storm drain. When you visit a beach, see that you
don’t spill food or dump waste around. Do not pollute
rivers by dumping garbage, sewage or other waste
material in them.
( Change Habits ) – Use emails instead of paper for
correspondence. Remember to switch your computer off
when leaving for the day. Don’t keep tge computer
monitor on when you are away from the desk. Do not
keep the lights of your cabin/ office on when you are
away. Avoid overuse of air conditioner’s. Do not use
disposable plastic cups and plates when you have the
option of using ceramic.
REUSE

REDUCE RECYCLE

This is the best measure to save the

environment. A simple way to do this is to
reduce the use of rubber and plastic instead,
use paper bags and cardboard containers. The
practice of buying in bulk can help save a lot of
packaging material and contribute to saving the
environment. Buy products that you can reuse.
You can reuse daily use items like old wood,
scrap paper to make wood and paper articles
and old clothes you can donate them to the
needy or make other cloth items.
Ways to reduce….
• Boil only water you Need
• Buy only what you need
• Buy things with less packaging
• Cook food for only those eating
• Switch of lights, monitors, appliances
• Print on both sides of paper
• Solar power
• Insulation in homes
• Service vehicles and equi. Regularly
• Use public transport
• Walk
Ways to reuse….
• New ways of using materials
• Reuse wropping, boxes, plastic bags
• “ Bag for life “
• Repair rater than dispores
• Composting ( paper, wood, food )
• Chip fat from local chip shop used as diesel
• Sell unwanted items
• Re-use coffee cups
• Print on both sides
• Rechargeable batteries
• Grey water harvesting
• Rain water harvesting
Recyclable Resources….
• Plastic
• Tins, aluminum, steel
• Paper
• Glass
• Cardboard
• Clothing
• Electronic equipment
• Cellphones
• Tire’s
• Some buildings
