Semantic As Sign System

1. The document discusses several theories of signs and meaning in language. It defines signs using models by Saussure and Morris that view a sign as consisting of a signifier and signified. 2. It also summarizes theories of meaning, including referential, mentalistic, behaviorist, meaning-is-use, verificationist, and truth-conditional theories. 3. Additionally, it distinguishes between sentence meaning, related to grammatical and lexical features, and utterance meaning, which incorporates contextual aspects.

4. The Meaning-is-Use Theory

The meaning of an expression is determined by, if not
identical with, its use in the language
5. The Verificationist Theory
The meaning of an expression, if it has one, is
determined by the verifiability of the sentences, or
propositions, containing it
6. The Truth-Conditional Theory
The meaning of an expression is its contribution to the
truth-condition of the sentences containing it (c.f John
Lyons, 1995:40)
Theories of Meaning
Lyons (1995) tried to propose useful distinction of
