TYPES OF RAM, ROM

AND ITS DESIGN

Presented by:

RAM (Read/Write Memory)

• Main Memory
• Random Access Memory
• Volatile Memory
Types OF RAM

• DRAM ( uses capacitors as memory cells)

• SRAM ( uses flip flops as memory cells)
DRAM

• Dynamic Random Access Memory

• It stores a bit data using a capacitor which makes up the cell.
• It is slower in comparison to SRAM.
• It has greater memory capacities.
• It needs to be refreshed periodically in order to function.
• It has high power consumption.
SRAM

• Static Random Access Memory

• Uses flip flop as memory cells.
• It is basically used in cache memories.
• It consumes low power.
• It has large storage capacity.
• It is expensive.
HOW DATA STORED IN RAM
(RAM DESIGN)

• Grid Structure
• Rows and Columns
• Index of rows and columns
ROM (READ ONLY MEMORY)

• Non volatile memory.

• Read Only Memory
• It stores information in binary format.
• Information stored on it is permanent.
• It contains electronic fuses that can be programmed for specific information.
ROM Design
ROM (bios)

• One of the most important types of ROM is the Basic Input/output System(BIOS)
• It is responsible for initializing the hardware components of the computer during startup.
• The BIOS is stored on a small chip on the motherboard and contains the instructions
necessary to boot up the system.
Rom(firmware)

• Another type of ROM is firmware, which is permanent software programmed into a read-
only memory chip.
• This type of ROM is used to control the operation of various hardware devices, such as
printers, scanners, and routers.
• Firmware is updated occasionally to fix bugs or add new features to the device.
• It is typically stored in flash memory, which can be reprogrammed multiple times.
• Firmware on a digital camera, which controls the camera's settings and functions is an
example of this type.
TYPES OF ROM

1.MROM (Masked Read-Only Memory):

MROM was the first ROM consisting of a grid of word lines and bit lines connected to
transistor switches. In MROM, data is physically encoded in the circuit and can only be
programmed at the time of manufacture. It wasn't expensive.
2. PROM (Programmable Read Only Memory):
PROM is a type of digital memory. In this all bits are locked by fuses or antifuses.
Data stored there is stored permanently and cannot be changed or deleted. Used for
low-level programs such as firmware and microcode.
TYPES OF ROM (Cont..)

3. EPROM (Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory):

Also known as EROM, is a type that can be reprogrammed. Data stored in EPROM can be
erased and reprogrammed by UV light. Reprogramming from it is limited. Before the era of
EEPROM and flash memory, EPROMs were used in microcontrollers.
4. EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory):
It can be electrically programmed and erased. The data and programs in this ROM can be erased
and programmed approximately 10,000 times. Erasing and programming the EEPROM takes
approximately 4 ms to 10 ms. Used in microcomputers and remote control keyless systems.
