WIDE AREA MEASUREMENT
SYSTEM
The WAMS effort is a strategic effort to meet critical information needs of the changing
power system.
• It is an advanced measurement technology to collect information.
• It is based on the new data acquisition technology.
• The WAMS has two major functions:
1. Obtaining the data
2. Extracting value from it
WAMS’s Major Functions
• Getting the data is accomplished with a new generation
of data recording hardware that produces high volume
recordings.
• Data is extracted and analyzed using several analysis
tools and algorithms.
Major Components of WAMS
• Global Positioning System(GPS)
• Phasor Measurement Unit(PMU)
• Phasor Data Concentrator(PDC)
WAMS Architecture
Necessity of WAMS
a. Immediate actions can be taken if some failures are detected
when the constant monitoring applications are available.
b. Early warning system: to improve the reliability
c. To avoid regional blackouts
Applications of WAMS
• Power system Real Time Monitoring
• Power system Oscillations
• Fault detection/Location of power systems
• Power system voltage stability
• Electric distributed power system
• Power system state estimation
WAMS in Smart Grid
• Wide-area measurement systems (WAMS) in smart grid can be
defined as a system that captures measurements in the power
grid over a wide area and across traditional control boundaries,
and then uses those measurements to improve grid stability and
events through wide-area situational awareness and advanced
analysis.
• WAMS provides visibility that is based on real-time data
streamed from Phasor Measurement Units (PMU). A host of
WAMS software applications use this data to provide context-
specific information, presented through an intuitive user
interface.
