Volume of Rectangular Prisms

The document discusses volume, defining it as the amount of space occupied by an object. It provides formulas for calculating the volume of cubes and rectangular prisms, which is length x width x height. Several examples are given of calculating volumes of cubes and rectangular prisms using the appropriate formulas.

Volume of Cube and

Rectangular Prisms
VOLUME

VOLUME is the amount of

liquid or solid that will FILL a
3-Dimensional object!

*Always measured in units cubed (u3)

QUICK DEFINITION
• 3-Dimensional objects are NOT FLAT.
• They have 3 measurements:
– Length
– Width
– Height
• Volume – the amount of space occupied by
an object.

Example:
The VOLUME of
this cube is all the
s
space contained by
s the sides of the
s cube, measured in
cube units (units3).

RECTANGULAR PRISM
• A RECTANGULAR PRISM, is a solid figure that
has six faces that are all rectangles. Opposite
faces are congruent and parallel.
Cube
• A CUBE, is a solid figure that has six faces that
are all squares. All faces are congruent and
parallel. This shape is classified as a
rectangular prism because all squares are
technically rectangles
