 Informatics and Healthcare
        Informatics
✘ Informatics - is a science that combines
  a domain science, computer science,
  information science, and cognitive
  science
    Informatics and Healthcare
           Informatics
✘ Healthcare informatics - may be defined
as the integration of healthcare sciences,
  computer science, information science,
and cognitive science to assist in the
  management of healthcare information.
Nursing Informatics ( NI)
is a subset of healthcare informatics. It shares
common areas of science with other health
 professions.
has unique areas that address the special
information needs for the nursing profession
  KATHRYN HANNAH
In 1985 proposed a definition that nursing
informatics is the use of information
technologies in relation to any nursing
functions and actions of nurses.
   Graves and Corcoran
Nursing informatics is a combination of
computer science, information science, and
nursing science designed to assist in the
management and processing of nursing data,
information, and knowledge to support the
practice of nursing and the delivery of nursing
care.
             Nursing Informatics:
Scope and Standards of Practice to include
                   wisdom:
Nursing informatics (NI) is a specialty that
integrates nursing science, computer science,
and information science to manage and
communicate data, information, knowledge,
and wisdom in nursing practice.
            Nursing Informatics:
Scope and Standards of Practice to include
                  wisdom:
NI supports consumers, patients, nurses, and
other providers in their decision-making in all
roles and settings. This support is accomplished
through the use of information structures,
information processes, and information
technology. (American Nurses Association,
2008, )
The Nursing Informatics Special Interest Group of the
      International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA-NI)
adopted the following definition in 2009
Nursing informatics science and practice integrates
nursing, its information and knowledge and their
management with information and communication
technologies to promote the health of people,
families, and communities worldwide
In 2014, ANA’s second edition of Nursing
Informatics: Scope and Standards of Practice
                    presented an
                 updated definition:
Nursing informatics (NI) is a specialty that
integrates nursing science with multiple
information management and analytical
sciences to identify, define, manage, and
communicate data, information, knowledge,
and wisdom in nursing practice.
           Nursing Informatics as a
                  Specialty
Characteristics of a nursing specialty include
differentiated practice, a well-derived
knowledge base, a defined research program,
organizational representation, educational
programs, and a credentialing mechanism
    Nursing Informatics as a
           Specialty
In early 1992, the ANA recognized
nursing informatics as a specialty in
nursing with a distinct body of
knowledge
 Nursing informatics is represented in
  international, national, regional, and local
  organizations
• Nursing school curricula include content, and sometimes
complete courses, on information technologies in healthcare
  and nursing
In 1989, the University of Maryland established the first
 graduate program in nursing informatics
The University of Utah followed in 1990.
 American Nurses Credentialing Center
              (ANCC
 established a certification process and
examination in 1995 to recognize those nurses
with basic informatics specialty competencie s
the test-content outline is available for free on
 the ANCC
✘ The Healthcare Information and Management Systems
Society (HIMSS) established a certification program,
known as the certified professional in healthcare
information and management systems (CPHIMS), which
may be of interest to informatics nurses
Two other informatics-related certification programs are
offered by the American Health Information Management
                 Association (AHIMA)
1.Registered health information administrator (RHIA)
       - manages patient health information and medical records, administers
computer information systems, collects and analyzes patient data, and uses
various classification systems and medical terminologies.
2.Registered health information technician (RHIT)
     - In this specialty, professionals ensure the completeness and
accuracy of patient data entered into computer systems and focus on
coding of diagnoses and patient procedures.
