Distinguishing Features of Anglo-American Sonnets

This document discusses the distinguishing features of Anglo-American sonnets. It begins by defining what a sonnet is - a 14 line poem originally created in Italy. Sonnets are traditionally about love and follow a specific structure. They have 14 lines divided into two sections by a volta or turning point. The lines also follow an iambic pentameter rhythm of 10 syllables per line. The document then describes the two main types of sonnets - the Italian or Petrarchan sonnet with an octave and sestet structure, and the English or Shakespearean sonnet with 3 quatrains and a couplet rhyme scheme.

Sonnet
 Is a form of poem.
 It is originally an Italian creation.
 Sonnet itself is derived from the Italian
word sonnetto which means “little song
or sound.”
 Traditionally, sonnets are known for their
theme of love.
Features of sonnets
Fourteen lines • Generally, all sonnets have 14 lines

Volta • The 14 lines are divided into two sections, usually of eight lines
and six.
• The break between the two parts is known as the volta.
Iambic • This is what we call the meter of the poem, which is the number
pentameter of syllables in each line of the poem.
• An iamb is a set of two syllables (the first is unstressed and the
second is stressed).
• Pentameter shows that there are five of these iambs in a line.
(10 syllables: unstressed, stressed, unstressed, stressed, etc.)

Rhyme scheme • Sonnets have different types of rhyme schemes.

• Some do not have rhyme at all.
Sonnet
 Additionally, iambic pentameter is a
rhyme scheme in which each line consists
of 10 syllables.
 Syllables are divided into 5 pairs called
iamb or iambic feet.
 An iamb is a metrical unit made up of 1
unstressed followed by 1 stressed syllable.

Italian (Petrarchan)
• It is named after the Italian poet Petrarch.
• This was the earliest strict sonnet.
• It is divided into two stanzas: octave (first 8 lines)
followed by sestet (final 6 lines)
• Petrarchan sonnet was brought to England by Sir
Thomas Wyatt.
• Henry Howard, an English nobleman, politician, and
poet translated and wrote his own rendition of
Petrarchan sonnet.
English (Shakespearean)
• It is written mainly in iambic pentameter, but the
lines are unrhymed and not grouped into stanzas.
• Usually, 3 quatrains (quatrain is 4 line verse) and
a couplet (couplet is 2 line verse) following a
rhyme scheme like: ABAB, CDCD, EFEF, GG.
• Shakespearean sonnet also contains a volta (can
either come after the first 8 lines or the beginning
