How Refrigerators Work

A refrigerator uses a vapor compression cycle to maintain a temperature slightly above freezing inside in order to store perishable food. It works by compressing a refrigerant vapor in the compressor, rejecting heat in the condenser, cooling the refrigerant through expansion, and absorbing heat inside the evaporator coil. Proper maintenance such as cleaning coils and minimizing door openings helps a refrigerator run efficiently.

How Refrigerator Works

A Refrigerator A Refrigerator is a
is also called machine that can
as “Fridge” make its inside colder
Use of Refrigerator
• A refrigerator maintains a temperature
a few degrees above the freezing point
of water.
• Optimum temperature range for
perishable food storage is 3 to 5 °C
• A similar device that maintains
temperature below the freezing point
of water is called a freezer. Typically -18
°C to -20 °C
• The refrigerator replaced the icebox,
which had been a common household
appliance for almost a century and a
half.
History…
• Before the refrigerator was
invented, some people would
use ice from frozen lakes to
keep food cool
• The first refrigerator used by
many people was the
“Monitor Top” refrigerator.
• The first practical vapor
compression refrigeration
system was built by James
Harrison, a Scottish
Australian.
How it works…
• Compressor – Develops
pressure by compressing
refrigerant vapor
• Condenser – Rejects Heat to
outside
• Throttling/Expansion Device –
Cools the refrigerant by
obstruction the flow
• Evaporator – Absorbs heat
Tips…
• Check the Energy Rating Label
• Check the rubber seal on your
refrigerator door
• Adjust the temperature settings
• Clean the coils under your
fridge
• Move your refrigerator from
wall
• Reduce the no. of door
openings
