Breeding Animals

Outbreeding involves mating animals that are less closely related than average in the population. It increases heterozygosity and includes greater variability, faster growth, higher milk and egg production. Types of outbreeding include outcrossing within breeds, linecrossing between inbred lines, crossbreeding between breeds, grading up over generations, and hybridization between species. While outbreeding introduces new genes with benefits, it also introduces new genetics into the population.

Outbreeding
 system of mating in which
animals mated are less closely
related than the average of the
population from which they
come.

 increase heterozygosity in
population.
What is Heterosis?
 common phenomenon of
outbreeding
 includes greater variability, a
faster growth rate, greater milk
production and greater egg
production in domestic animals.

Advantages:
 New and high yielding genes can be
introduced into the population through
outbreeding
They produce some valuable traits
Can create new breeds
 can produce a hybrid of superior vigor
and value
Disadvantage:
 introduction of new genes into
population
