INTRODUCTION
• Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), have changed from
being a technology of information & communication to a curriculum
creation and transmission system for learners.
• By using these, new teaching strategies are being introduced in the
curriculum, known as “Smart Classroom”.
• It uses instructional material, 3D animated modules and videos to make
students understand.
• The Smart Learning approach provides people of all ages a framework and
a bunch of Smart Thinking Tools that encourage higher levels of
understanding and innovative ideas.
SMART CLASSROOM
• A “Smart Classroom” is a classroom that has an instructor equipped with a computer and
audio-visual equipment, 3D animated modules, etc.
• It is generally equipped with several multimedia components to enhance teaching-
learning. There are new media classrooms or digitized classrooms.
• The concepts of a “Smart Classroom” in terms of pedagogical setting and its arrangement
for designing such a classroom to transform learning spaces in modern smart classes.
• There are six basic concepts of a smart classroom:
adaptability,
Comfort
connectivity
multiplicity,
openness
personalization
Adaptability
• Permits variation in teaching styles and settings
• A chance for students to appreciate modern technology
• The mode of teaching is more dynamic
Comfort
• Offers optimum comfort to create a learning experience enjoyable.
Connectivity
• A two-fold concept; an internet connection to devices and informational or social
connectivity where students can connect to their friends, teachers and professionals.
Multiplicity
• The concept points out that smart classrooms have such capabilities for the utilization of
several stimuli and resources
• There is a space for creativity along with critical thinking and reasoning and it can be
customized for various learning styles
Openness
• Learning occurs beyond classroom spaces, both visually and physically
Personalization
• Teachers and students can customize the settings according to their needs and likes
Main focus of the concept
• Visual learning, animated multimedia lessons
• Quick and immersive learning
• Progressive improvement in student education
• To look for overall high performance
• Student assessment and evaluation
• Report cards
Hardware involved
• Projector
• Interactive Smart Board
• Computer
• UPS
• Speakers
• Teaching software tools
Traditional classroom versus Smart classroom
Traditional Smart
• Instructions are confined to textbooks and copies • Students are given a variety of learning materials which
• Traditionally, records of school activities like fees, include e-books, PDF documents, online links to website
attendance, examination, payroll and registers are content relevant to the subject, etc.
maintained in a paper-based format, which • Paperless records are maintained, thereby facilitating
increases the chance of data loss. the security of data.
• Teacher is the sole controller, decision-maker and
instructor, having the power and responsibility of • It is one of the most interactive and democratic ways of
the whole class teaching and learning
• Students are considered empty vessels needed to
be filled with the elixir of knowledge by teachers. • Student is the key focus and the teacher is a facilitator
• Low cost rather than an authoritarian as in traditional one
• High cost
Merits
• Innovative and interactive
• Transcending the boundaries of space, time and geography
• Catering to the needs of every student
• Students are more focused and excited due to audio–video tools
• Encourages difficult challenges
• Based on modern teaching and learning techniques
• Improves the visual memory of the child
• Creative and unique method of learning and teaching
Limitations
• Teacher should be well accustomed to the use of new software and
technology
• The implementation is quite costly
• Rural and remote areas are not equipped with technological infrastructure
• Continuous exposure to computers or mobiles for learning leads to various
health issues such as eye strain, deafness, cancer etc…
• Research work in this field is less
• Lack of teaching materials and essential tools
