Religion has significantly influenced culture and society in several ways. It has provided moral and ethical principles that promote social harmony and unity. Additionally, religion reduces fear of the unknown by providing explanations for phenomena that science cannot explain. However, religion has also caused conflicts and discrimination at times by affirming social hierarchies and triggering wars between religious groups.

Itis considered as old as human
civilization because it played an important
role in the lives of our ancestors.

It has became the bases of indifference
between and within societies.
It caused outbreak of particular conflicts in
the past.

Played important influences to culture and
society.
Each religion handed down from
generation to another as part of common
norm based from geographical and societal
in the demands of contemporary times.
Promotes Social Harmony
It practices a set of rituals and ceremonious
rites of passage and rites of intensification.
It provides divine authority to ethical and
moral principles which also help promote
unity among people.
Provides Moral Values
It encourages moral values by providing a
systematic model of the universe, which in
effect determines organized human
behavior.
Meritocracy as a systematic model to
standardize people’s behavior in society.
Reduces Fear of the Unknown
Religion provides answer for the
phenomena and questions that science or
reason cannot explain.
Religion developed man’s need to have a
sense of origin and destination.
Gives Positive Goals in Life
People were inspired by the stories of
different prophets from their own religious
affiliations.
These people showed how ordinary people
like them were given important missions in
life and how they struggled to carry out
their missions.
Gives a Sense of Belonging
Provide people with personal identity as
part of a group with similar world view,
values, practices, and lifestyle.
Provides Social Change
Religion has potential to institute social
change, especially in the issues concerning
poverty, reproductive health, gender
inequality, and religious discrimination.
Affirms Social Hierarchy
Some religions affirm social hierarchy
often favoring men and as a result,
perpetuate the notions of class or gender
discrimination and oppression.
Triggers Conflicts and Fights
Wars have been fought in the name of
religion and this phenomenon continues up
to the present time.
Religion Causes Discrimination
Itcan be a source of discrimination or the
prejudicial treatment of different categories
of people or things especially on the basis
of race, religion, age, and/or sex.
Impedes Scientific Success
Some moral teachings of other religions
are deemed by secular communities to be
detrimental to development.
